Removal and Replacement
REMOVAL
1. Drain rear axle oil
2. Remove exhaust system complete, refer to Exhaust System
3. Remove exhaust heat shield (105c)
4. Detach propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a)
5. Detach propeller shaft from rear axle center assemble
WARNING
^ Risk of fatal injury due to vehicle slipping off or tilting on the hoist
^ Align vehicle between the pillars of the hoist and position the four support plates at the hoist mounting points specified by the vehicle manufacturer
6. Raise and support vehicle
7. Detach rear axle shafts (37) from connecting flange
8. Move rear axle shaft so that it is almost horizontal, push together and remove from connecting flange downwards at an angle and tie securely to rear spring
9. Detach cover for fuel pump assembly (115f)
10. Disconnect electrical connector (X62/8)
11. Support rear axle center assembly (5O)
12. Unscrew bolts (54b) on extension carrier
13. Detach front center assembly suspension
14. Remove rear axle center assembly l501
INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order, noting the following information:
- Replace nuts (106e)
- Replace self-locking bolts and nuts
- Replace bolts with internal serrations or hexagon socket bolts and washers for attaching axle shaft to drive flange
- Replace rear axle breather
- Install front center assembly suspension as follows:
a. Install rubber mount (60b) and short 14 mm disk (60a) at top in rear axle carrier (1)
b. Install rubber mount with guide collar (60c) and long 17 mm disk (60d) at bottom
- Ensure that the bearing is properly seated
c. Install assigned shim (60e) between disk (60d) and rear axle renter assembly (50)
d. Replace self-locking hexagon nut (52) and install rear axle center assembly (50) on rear axle carrier (1), then tighten to: 45 Nm
- Tighten bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing as follows:
a. Tighten bolts only after fastening the flexible disks to transmission and rear axle.
b. Before tightening the hexagon bolts, and with no load on the rear axle, push the propeller shaft intermediate bearing from its present installed position 5 mm toward the front (arrows) and then tighten the hexagon bolts.
c. Tighten center bearing bolts as follows:
Bolt with washer: 25 Nm
Bolt with collar and centering tip: 30 Nm
- Lightly lubricate bolt thread and bolt head support of axle shaft to drive flange bolts
- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Rear axle center assembly extension carrier:
Silver Or Blue Bolts: 70 Nm
Yellow Bolts: 80 Nm
- Self-locking bolt. rear axle shaft to connecting flange (thread and bolt head support lubricated)
10 mm bolts: 70 Nm
12 mm bolts: 100 Nm
- Rear axle center assembly breather: 30 Nm
- Self-locking nut of flexible disk to rear propeller shaft or rear axle center assembly: 60 Nm
- Fill rear axle assembly with 1.2 Liters of suitable lubricant
