Replacement






REMOVAL

NOTE:
^ When removing the left shaft, remove the exhaust system from the flanged connection, refer to Exhaust System
^ Refer to the illustration during procedures

WARNING: Risk of accident when picking up a rear axle half, vehicle must not lift off platform surface

1. On models with Adaptive Damping System (ADS) unhook control rod at level controller or sensor
2. Remove the twelve point collared nut of axle shaft to be removed, discard nut
3. If axle is tight in axle shaft flange, install puller/installer tool No. 210 589 03 43 00 on rear axle shaft flange and press out axle shaft
4. Move rear axle shaft into approximately a horizontal position
5. Remove multi-point bolts retaining inner axle joint to differential flange
- Discard bolts
6. Remove axle shaft

INSTALLATION
1. Prepare rear axle for installation as follows:

(039) Drilling/Tapping Fixture
(039a) 4 mm removable drilling bushing
(039b) 8 mm fixed drilling and tapping bushing
(039c) Fixing bolt

a. Screw drilling and tapping fixture (039) tool No. 210 589 01 40 00 onto the shaft journal of the rear axle shaft (37) and clamp tool into a vise
b. Using a 4 mm or equivalent drill, drill core bore hole to a depth (a) approx. 20 mm, cooling and lubricating the drill in the process
c. Remove drilling bush (039a) with fixing bolt (039c)





d. Using a 6.8 mm or equivalent, drill, drill core bore hole to a depth (a) approx. 20 mm, cooling and lubricating the drill in the process
e. Tap 8 mm thread using a stage 1 and 2 tap
f. Unscrew drilling fixture (039) from rear axle shalt and clamp rear axle shalt in a vise





g. Finish-tap 8 mm thread using a stage 3 tap
2. Position axle into place
3. Pull axle shaft into hub using puller/installer tool
4. Install new multi-point bolts retaining inner axle joint to differential flange, tighten as follows:
- 10 mm bolts: 70 Nm
- 12 mm bolts: 100 Nm
- Tighten the rear axle shaft to to rear axle shaft flange 12 point collard bolt to: 220 Nm
- Use Loctite 574 or equivalent sealing compound on 12 point collared nut
