INSTALLATION OF CELLULAR TELEPHONE (CTEL) SYSTEM

In this Service Information are the Work Instructions nos. 372, 373 and 374 for installation of the cellular telephone (CTEL) system in model year 1998 models 202, 208 and 210 vehicles.





NAM Programming Guide 5-2673-097 is valid for both the mobile and portable telephone systems. Refer of this SI for the Authentication Programming Instructions.

One pad of each NAM Programming Guide was sent under separate cover to the dealership service managers.

Registration:
Installation of all MB cellular telephone (CTEL) systems must be reported to MBNA. Installation prior to or at time of retail MUST be recorded through VISTA when the vehicle sale is reported. However, once the vehicle has been reported sold, all subsequent installations must be registered by sending a CELLULAR TELEPHONE INSTALLATION / WARRANTY REGISTRATION form to Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc., Warranty Operations. Please photocopy form shown in section 3 of the Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual.

If the installation of a MB cellular telephone is not registered with MBNA Warranty Operations, future claims for the unit will be denied.

Note:
The transfer of units from one vehicle to another, voids the warranty.

Authentication Programming Instructions

Models R170, W202, C208, W210 (Except kit number Q 6 82 0286), S210 Model Year 1998

The cellular telephones for the above referenced models are equipped with authentication (A-Key) software, which can be enabled under direction of the cellular service provider. All telephones are shipped with the A-Key code set to zero. To change the A-Key code, proceed as follows:

1. Enter the word "A-K-E-Y" (2-5-3-9) using the handset keypad.

2. Press FCN twice.

3. Enter the A-Key number (up to 26 digits), supplied by the carrier.

4. Press STO twice.

5. If programming was successful, "VALID" will appear in the display.

If "VALID" appears, press END.
The phone will turn off, then on again, just as it does when completing NAM programming.
This stores the A-Key data.

6. If programming was not successful, "INVALID" will appear in the display. If this occurs, repeat steps 1 through 5.

NAM Programming
When programming a telephone for the first time, use the factory preset codes, otherwise use customer codes.

Preparation
1. Press PWR
2. Enter Unlock Code (factory preset 1-2-3)
3. Press FCN, 0, Enter Security Code (factory preset at 0-0-0-0-0-0) twice, Press RCL 01 should appear in the display, if not, retry from step 1

To enter first NAM
1. Press *, Enter System ID Number, Press *
2. Press *, Enter Area Code, Press *
3. Press *, Enter Phone Number, Press
4. Press *, Enter 0-8 for mobile phone, Enter 1-0 for portable phone, Press *
5. Press *, Enter Overload Class, Press *

8. Press *, Enter new Unlock Code, Press *
9. Press *, Enter Paging Channel, Press *
10. Press *, Enter Option Programming, Press *

To enter second NAM
1. Press *, Enter second System ID Number, Press *

Steps 7, 8 and 11 are not required for second NAM programming, the data is defaulted from First NAM programming.

To review the NAM programming and ensure that the proper numbers were entered, repeatedly press *, make changes as necessary.

To reprogram without initializing the Three-times programming counter, press CLEAR and reprogram.

To store the programming information a two-digit step number 01-11 must appear on the display. Press * until any step number appears, then press SEND. The cellular telephone is now ready for use.

Note:
If the cellular telephone is programmed outside of the customers Home service area, the first outgoing call placed from the cellular telephone should be made when the customer arrives in the Home service area. Failure to do so may cause the customer to be placed in the carriers "Denied service" category.
