Front Passenger's Airbag
Technician Safety Information
Removal
- Turn ignition key to "0" position.
- Unclip and cover Negative battery terminal.
- Remove floor mat in front passenger's foot space.
- Unscrew and remove foot rest.
- Disconnect Red (X11/13) airbag test coupling/plug connector.
- Open glove compartment flap.
- Remove the 4 clips [2] with screwdriver.
- Push sides of glove compartment insert [3] together a little and remove.
- Detach connection to glove compartment light.
- Remove the 2 screws [4] on lock [5].
- Detach plug connector [10] on front passenger's airbag unit [7].
- Loosen the 4 nuts [6] on bracket for front passenger's airbag.
- Remove front passenger's airbag unit [7] through glove compartment opening.
NOTE: No further work may be carried out on the entire airbag unit, which must be stored under personal supervision (for lengthy periods store under lock and key).
WARNING: After removal, the airbag unit should always be stored with the cushioned side up.
Installation In Reverse Sequence.
Installation Notes:
- Only the complete airbag unit is considered to be a spare part.
- The airbag unit must not be treated with grease, solvents or other cleaning agents.
- The airbag unit must not be exposed to temperatures in excess of 100°C (212° F), not even temporarily.
- The airbag unit is highly sensitive to shocks. If it is dropped from a height in excess of 50 cm (1.6 ft.) onto a hard surface it may no longer be installed. Instead it should be returned to the Sindelfingen factory in special transport packing.
- Before installing the airbag unit check that the ground cable has been disconnected from the battery, the terminal covered and the ignition key set to position "0".
- The plug connectors must engage audibly.
- The "SRS" warning light must go out after approximately 4 seconds.
