Installation of cellular telephone (ctel) system and CD changer
Attached to this Service Information are the Work Instructions nos. 362 and 363 for installation of the cellular telephone (CTEL) system and CD changer in model year 1998 model 170 vehicles.
NAM Programming Guide 5-2673-097 is valid for both the mobile and portable telephone systems.
One pad of each NAM Programming Guide will be sent under separate cover to the dealership service managers.
Registration:
Installation of all MB cellular telephone (CTEL) systems and CD changers must be reported to MBNA Installation prior to or at time of retail MUST be recorded through VISTA when the vehicle sale is reported. However, once the vehicle has been reported sold, all subsequent installations must be registered by sending a cellular telephone installation / warranty registration form or CD changer installation/warranty registration form to Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc., Warranty Operations. Please photocopy forms shown in section 3 of the Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual.
If the installation of a MB cellular telephone or CD changer is not registered with MBNA Warranty Operations, future claims for the units will be denied.
Note:
Transfer of units from one vehicle to another, voids the warranty.

Work Instructions
SUBJECT:
MODEL 170 Model Year 1998
Installation of cellular Telephone (CTEL) System
Disconnect and cover negative battery terminal. Installing microphone
1. Remove the interior dome lamp.
2. Measure and mark locations for holes 1 and 2 from the edge of interior dome lamp opening and from the edge of garage door opener as per illustration Figure 1. Dimension:
A = 35 mm
B = 20 mm
3. Using microphone base as a template, carefully punch hole locations 1 and 2 to 4 mm using an awl
.
4. Enlarge forward hole (2, Figure 1) to 8 mm so the microphone connector can pass through. Secure microphone base to headliner with 3X1 0 screw and speed-nut (Figure 2). The plastic washer is installed between the headliner and the microphone base.Place 2 fingers over the mounting plate from inside the headliner, and snap the microphone evenly onto the base.
5. Connect one end of the pre-amp (wrapped in foam) to the microphone cable, and the other end to the vehicle prewire connector (Figure 2).
6. Reinstall dome lamp.
Installing in-dash controller (IDC)
1. Remove the radio and its console panel.
2. While carefully prying under the front lip of the storage box assembly with wedges as shown (in Figure 3,) push the box out of the console from the rear.
3. Remove the front bezel from the storage box assembly, then separate the box liner from the frame.
4. Insert the IDC into the frame from behind until it locks in place. Reinstall the bezel.
5. Connect the vehicle harness to the IDC and install the IDC assembly into the console.
6. Reinstall the panel and radio.
Installing handset (HS)
1. Open the center console storage compartment lid, and peel back the carpeting from the front rise of the box.
2. Remove the harness access cover (pre-punched) and pull out the prewire harness RJ-45 connector. Slide the connector into the handset mounting bracket.
Portable only:
Additionally, locate the coax cable and slide it into the notch in the handset mounting bracket.
3. Mount the cradle to the bracket from underneath using 4 M4X10 screws.
4. Connect the handset plug(s) to the prewire connector(s) (Figure 4).
5. Insert the tabs of the mounting bracket into the grooves in the storage box, and secure the bracket to the console floor using M5X16 tapping screw (1 screw for portable,2 screws for mobile).
Installing transceiver (mobile phone):
1. Locate the 25-pole coaxial antenna connector and retractable hardtop emergency release cable in the left rear trunk liner, near the Tail lamp assembly, and route out of the opening (Figure 5).
2. Connect the cables to the TRU, and install in recess with connectors facing DOWN, through the access hole (Figure 6).
3. Slide the foam block around the TRU, and push into the opening (ensure that the release cable is accessible).
4. Remove the 2 trim pins from the trunk liner, and install the plastic cover over the recess containing the TRU. Replace the 2 trim pins, inserting through the 2 lower holes in the cover. Punch 2 additional holes in the trunk liner, using the cover as a template, and install 2 additional trim pins.
Installing 3 watt booster and portable support electronic box:
1. Locate the 25-pole and 2 coaxial antenna connectors in the left rear trunk liner, near the Tail lamp assembly.
2. Route the 25-pole, and the 2 coax connectors out of the opening (Figure 5).
3. Connect male Y-cable to the 25-pole prewire connector. Do not push through opening.
4. Connect the female 25-pole Y connector labeled PSE to the portable support electronics module. Slide the foam block around the PSE module and push into the recess The wires exiting the 25-pole connector must face downward through the opening. The connectors assembled in step 3 must be replaced a top the PSE module. Damaged during retractable hardtop operation.
5. Connect coaxial cables to the 3-watt booster, making sure to connect cable from console to input, and coax to vehicle antenna to output. The coax to vehicle antenna is terminated in a right angle connector. The cable from the console must receive an SAP to mini-UHF adaptor, included in the kit.
6. Connect 25-pole female connector labeled "booster" to 3-wall booster.
7. Secure the booster to its mounting plate using 2 M4 nuts, punch 2 holes in trunk liner using plate as a template and fasten booster/plate assembly to trunk liner using 2 trim fasteners.
8. Remove the 2 trim pins from the trunk liner, and install the plastic cover over the recess containing the TRU. Replace the 2 trim pins, inserting through the 2 lower holes in the cover. Punch 2 additional holes in the trunk liner, using cover as a template, and install 2 additional trim pins.
Reconnect battery cable, code radio and program and test telephone function.
