Campaign - Child Protection Warning Label

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: February 1997

REF. NO. MBNA 91/29

SUBJECT:
CHILD PROTECTION WARNING LABEL
MODEL 170 (SLK)

According to Federal Government statistics released October 3, 1996, unless they are deactivated, inflating airbags pose a risk of death or serious injury to children under 13 years old. In light of this risk all model 170 (SLK) vehicles have been equipped with the BabySmart(TM) system. A BabySmart(TM) compatible child seat, when properly installed in the model 170 (SLK) front passenger seat, disables the passenger front airbag.

Figure 1:

In order to remind SLK customers of the need to use a BabySmart(TM) compatible child restraint or not transport children under 13 in their vehicles, MBNA is voluntarily installing a child protection warning label (Figure 1) on model 170 (SLK) vehicles commencing early February 1997. Affixing of the child protection warning label is shown on page 2. Please affix the new child protection warning label immediately to each model 170 (SLK) vehicle in your dealership. If some vehicles have already been sold, please contact the owner to bring in the vehicle so the label can be affixed as soon as possible.

Affixing Child Protection Warning Label

Figure 2:

Affix child protection warning label to the right front passenger door interior panel (arrow, Figure 2).

IMPORTANT!
^ Peel off old child protection label (S-2856-096) if installed.
^ Surface must be clean, dry, and not colder than 50°F.
^ Clean area with rubbing alcohol if necessary.
^ Peel off backing and apply label to proper location (arrow, Figure 2).
^ Complete bonding of label takes place in 72 hours.

The affixed child protection warning label should be visible only when right front passenger door is open. This location was selected so that the label message is visible when the door is open, the critical moment when an adult needs to make the right decision about potential hazards for their child. In addition, this will avoid the urge for front passenger to "pick and peel" the label when the car is in motion.
