Complete Suspension and/or Axle Halves






NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL
1. Raise engine as follows:
a. Remove air cleaner and windshield washer reservoir





b. Insert suitable bolts into shock absorber mounts from below on left and right
c. Slide on top shock absorber rubber mount with plate and screw on nut.
d. Install rear supports on engine lifting frame (065) tool No. 140 589 01 61 00, or equivalent
e. Set down engine lifting frame (065)
- Ensue that no cables or hoses are pinched
f. Engage hooks into engine suspension eyes, then lift engine
2. Remove front wheels




3. Install protective washers to the wheel hubs for brake dust shields using 3 wheel bolts
4. Remove front springs. Service and Repair
5. Remove all plastic covers on the front axle
6. Disconnect electrical connector of front axle distributor in component compartment


WARNING:
^ Risk of poisoning due to consuming brake fluid.
^ Risk of injury due to brake fluid contacting the skin or eyes.
^ Only pour brake fluid into suitable, appropriately marked containers.
^ Wear protective clothing and safety glasses when handling brake fluid.

7. Unscrew brake hose (39) from brake pipe
- Protect pipes against contamination with suitable covers and caps
8. Remove steering knuckle (5) from upper wishbone. Service and Repair
9. Remove stabilizer bar mount (21b)
10. Remove steering shaft from the steering coupler (2)
11. Remove high-pressure expanding hose and return line (30i and 30f) on the steering gear
12. On models with level control, detach return line from steering gear
13. If equipped with headlamp range adjustment, disconnect coupling from wiring harness








14. On all models, using assembly attachment (070) tool No 210 589 01 62 00, or equivalent, support front axle carrier as shown in the illustration
15. Disconnect engine mounts from front axle carrier
16. Remove front axle carrier bolts (1f)

NOTE: The bolts (1f) are self-tapping, therefore observe the following:
^ Never chase threads in the longitudinal member
^ Replace bolts
^ Only use original type bolts (4 pieces)
^ Do not insert bolts at an angle when screwing them in
^ Do not use impact wrench
^ Observe tightening torque

17. Lower front axle carrier

INSTALLATION
- Reinstall in opposite order, noting the following:
- Replace self-locking bolts and nuts
- Check stabilizer bar rubber mount
- The support surfaces of the front axle carrier to longitudinal member must be cleaned and level.
- When attaching the front axle carrier to longitudinal member, push bolts (arrows) on the front axle carrier in the bores on the longitudinal member
- Fill up power steering pump
- Bleed brake system on the front axle, refer to brakes and traction control
- Carry out chassis alignment check. Service and Repair
- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Bolt for front engine mount on front axle support: 30 Nm
- Self-locking bolt for stabilizer bar on frame: 20 Nm
- Bolt for front axle support on front en: 130 Nm
- Brake lines brake hoses: 18 Nm
- Bolt for steering coupling: 20 Nm
- Return line on steering gear: 40 Nm
- High Pressure expansion hose on steering gear: 40 Nm
