Steering: Service and Repair

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.









NOTE:
^ Under no circumstances should the power steering pump draw in air
^ if air is drawn in by the power steering pump an air cushion may form in the low pressure chamber of the steering gear which is only eliminated after a longer trip (greater than 5O km)

1. Fill up reservoir (30) of power steering pump to approx. 10 mm below upper edge of reservoir
2. Start engine 2 to 3 times
- The steering system bleeds itself automatically
3. Turn the steering from lock to lock several times with the engine running, in between topping up the steering gear or central hydraulic fluid system depending on the version
4. Check and correct fluid level
5. Check steering system for leaks

NOTE:
^ A slight fluid film on the radial shaft sealing ring or on the contact face of the housing is due to the design
^ If the fluid level is too low, establish and eliminate the cause
