Removing And Installing Jacket Tube
1 Remove cover below instrument panel
2 Remove steering wheel
3 Remove carrier plate (321) with horn and air-bag carbon brushes
4 Remove contact spiral (A45)
5 Remove steering angle sensor (N49)
6 Remove instrument cluster
7 Remove steering lock (37)
8 Remove electronic steering lock (ESC)
9 Remove combination switch (S4)
10 Remove jacket tube trim (99)
11 Disconnect contact spiral/airbag unit connector
12.1 Detach operating switch (93a) and expose, or disconnect electrical connector
- Vehicles with adjustable steering column
NOTE: Installation: Ensure that control cables and electrical cables are correctly routed
12.2 Detach reinforcement brace (98) Vehicles with adjustable steering column
13 Unscrew upper bolt (25a) of steering coupling
CAUTION: On vehicles with contact spiral, only disconnect connector after removing the contact spiral.
14 Detach lower nuts on jacket tube (71b)
15 Detach upper bolts on jacket tube (71a)
NOTE:
- Installation: Do not tighten bolts and nuts (the jacket tube must remain adjustable) Electric Jacket tube: Tighten the upper bolts first
- Rigid and manually adjustable Jacket tub: Tighten the bottom nuts first
16 Pull jacket tube with lower steering shaft out of steering coupling (25) and remove
CAUTION: Do not use force as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to the effects of side force
NOTE:
- Installation: Ensure the straight-ahead position of the jacket tube (triggering lugs must point towards the combination switch) and steering gear
- Push lower steering shaft as far as possible into steering coupling
17 Check lateral runout of lower steering shaft (80a)
- If necessary if tolerance is exceeded, Replace lower steering shaft (80a).
18 Install in the reverse order
