Purpose/Function of Indicator and Warning Displays
Shown On Instrument Cluster of Model 203.0, 203.2:
Warning lights, left and right flashers (A1e1, A1e2)
These are activated differently according to function:
- When using the turn indicator flashers, only one of the warning lights is activated.
The signal for activating the light comes via a specific cable from the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1).
If one of the turn indicator lamps fails, the warning lights are activated by the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) at double frequency.
- When using the hazard flashers, both warning lights are activated by the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module(N10/1).
To do this, the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) receives an appropriate signal from the upper operating field control module (N72/1) via the interior CAN.
- When EDW anti-theft alarm flashing is activated, both warning lights are activated. The signal comes from the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN.
- When flashing for special functions, both warning lights are activated by the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/2). To do this, the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/2) receives a signal from the special-purpose vehicle multi-function control module (MSS, N26/9) via the interior CAN.
NOTE: While turn indication is only possible with terminal 15 ON, the other types of flashing are also possible with terminal 15 0FF. The audible turn signal indicator, (A1h2)sounds in parallel with the flasher frequency.
High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)
The signal to activate this lamp comes from the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN.
Fuel reserve warning light (A1e4)
This warning lamp lights as soon as the reserve level is reached.
Activation is in conjunction with the fuel level and reserve gauge (A1p2).
For more information, see document "Fuel level gauge function"
Brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7)
This lamp is activated if the parking brake is not released when driving or the brake fluid is below the minimum level.
The signal to activate the lamp comes in both cases from the front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1).
Seat belt warning light (A1e9)
This indication lamp is not available in all country variants. It lights if the belt buckle in the driving seat is not inserted when the engine is running. In addition, a warning chime sounds in some country variants.
The signal to activate the lamp comes from the restraint system control module (N2/7) via the interior CAN.
Malfunction indication and warning lamp for airbag (A1e15)
This lamp is activated if there is a fault in the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The signal to activate the lamp comes from the restraint system control module (N217) via the interior CAN.
Glow plug indicator lamp (A1e16)
This warning light is only fitted in vehicles with diesel engine. It lights with terminal 15 ON, as long as the preheat time is running.
The signal for activating the lamp comes from the ME control module (N3/10) or CDI control module (N3/9) via the engine compartment CAN.
If there is a fault in the glow plug indicator lamp (A1e16). a fault code is set in the instrument cluster (A1) and a corresponding message is sent to the ME control module (N3/10) or CDI control module (N3/9) via the engine compartment CAN. There is, however, no fault message in the multifunction display (A1p13)!
ABS malfunction indicator lamp (A1e17)
This lamp is lit if there is a fault in the ABS. The signal to activate the light comes from the traction system control module (N47) via the engine compartment CAN.
LIM function lamp (variable speed limit, A1e33)
This lamp is lit if the variable speed limit is switched on.
The signal to activate the light comes from the ME control module (N3/10) or CDI control module (N3/9) via the engine compartment CAN.
ESP warning lamp (A1e41)
This lamp is actuated whenever the system intervenes in the driving situation.
The signal to activate the lamp comes from the traction system control module (N47) via the engine compartment CAN.
Engine diagnosis malfunction indicator lamp (A1e58) or CHECK ENGINE (A1e26)
Depending on country variant, vehicles are equipped with either the engine diagnosis malfunction indicator lamp (A1e58) or the "CHECK ENGINE" malfunction indicator lamp (A1e26). The lamp is activated if there is a fault in the injection system, the ignition system or the exhaust system.
The signal to activate the lamp comes from the ME control module (N3/10) or CDI control module (N3/9) via the engine compartment CAN.
DTR warning lamp (A1e59)
This lamp is only fitted on vehicles equipped with Distronic (code 219a). It is activated if the vehicle gets too close to the vehicle in front.
The signal to activate the lamp comes from the DTR control module (N63/1) via the engine compartment CAN.
DTR function lamp (A1e60)
This lamp is only fitted on vehicles equipped with Distronic (code 219a).
It is activated when Distronic is switched on.
The signal to activate the light comes from the DTR control module (N63/1) via the engine compartment CAN.
NOTE: All indication and warning lights in the instrument cluster (A1) are equipped with light emitting diodes (LEDs).
NOTE: In addition to activation as described above, all indication and warning lights with the exception of
- Left turn signal indicator lamp(A1e1),
- Right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2),
- Glow plug indicator lamp (A1e16),
- High beam indicator lamp (A1e3),
- Seat belt warning light (A1e9)
are also activated by indication lamp test.
NOTE: In the case of some of the indication and warning lights (e.g. engine diagnosis malfunction indicator lamp A1e58), a fault message parallel to activation occurs in the multifunction display (A1p13). While most of the messages can be acknowledged, the indication and warning lamps remain lit as long as the fault is present. These indications cannot be canceled!
