Left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2)

These are activated differently according to function:
With direction indicator flashing either the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) or right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) are actuated in the instrument cluster (A1). The signal to actuate the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) or right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) comes from the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module via the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B)(N10/2). If one of the turn signal lamps fails, the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) or right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) is actuated at twice the usual frequency.

- With hazard warning flashing the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) are always actuated by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2). For this purpose the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) receives a correspond message from the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) via CAN-B.
- With anti-theft alarm system flashing (on vehicles with code (551a) anti-theft alarm system (ATA)) the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) are always actuated. The signal comes via the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2).
- With flashing for special functions (on vehicles with code (450) taxi version) the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2) in the instrument cluster (A1) are always actuated by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2). For this purpose the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) receives a corresponding message from the special vehicle multifunction control unit (SVMCU [MSS]) (N26/9) via the CAN-B.

Whilst direction indicator flashing is only possible with "circuit 15 ON", other types of flashing are also possible with "circuit 15 OFF". An acoustic signal accompanies the rhythmic flashing of the indicator lamp (A1h2).

High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)
The signal to actuate the high beam indicator lamp (A1e3) comes via the CAN-B from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).

Fuel reserve warning light (A1e4)
The fuel reserve warning lamp (A1e4) is actuated as soon as the reserve range is reached. Actuation is effected in conjunction with the fuel level and reserve indicator (A1p2).

Brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7)
The brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) is actuated, if the parking brake is not released when driving or the minimum brake fluid level is dropped below.
In both cases the signal to actuate the brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) comes from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).

Seat belt warning light (A1e9)
The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up when "circuit 61 is ON" for 6 seconds if the seat belt buckle of the driver seat is not inserted. The signal to actuate the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) with code (491a) USA version
The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up when "circuit 61 is ON" for 6 seconds if the seat belt buckle of the driver seat is not inserted. In addition a warning tone sounds for 6 seconds. The signal to actuate the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) with code (498) Japan version
The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) lights up when "circuit 15 is ON" for 6 seconds if the seat belt buckle of the driver seat is not inserted. In addition a warning tone sounds for 6 seconds. The signal to actuate the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

If the driver seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) is closed, the warning tone and warning lamp are deactivated.

Airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15)
The airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) is actuated if there is a fault in the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The signal to actuate the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) comes via the CAN-B from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

Preglow indicator lamp (A1e16)
The preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) is only fitted to vehicles with diesel engines. It is actuated with "circuit 15 ON" as long as the preheating time runs. The signal to actuate the preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) comes from the CDI control unit via the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C)(N3/9). In the event of a defect in the preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) a fault code is set in the instrument cluster (A1) and a corresponding message is transmitted to the CDI control unit (N3/9) via CAN-C. However, there is no error message in the multifunction display (A1p13).

ABS indicator lamp (A1e17)
The ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) is actuated when a fault in the antilock brake system (ABS) is present. The signal to actuate the ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) comes from the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5) via the CAN-C.

LIM (variable vehicle speed limiter) function indicator lamp (A1e33)
The LIM (variable speed limiter) function indicator lamp (A1e33) is actuated when the variable speed limitation is switched on.
The signal to actuate the LIM (variable speed limiter) function indicator lamp (A1e33) comes from the motor electronics control unit (N3/10) or from the CDI control unit (N3/9) via the CAN-C.

ESP warning lamp (A1e41)
The ESP warning lamp (A1e41) is actuated as soon as the system intervenes in the driving activities.
The signal to actuate the ESP warning lamp (A1e41) comes from ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5) via the CAN-C.

Engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58)
The engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) is actuated when a fault in the injection system, the ignition system or in the exhaust emission system is present.
The signal to actuate the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) comes from the motor electronics control unit (N3/10) or from the CDI control unit (N3/9) via the CAN C.

DTR warning lamp (A1e59)
The DTR warning lamp (A1e59) is only fitted to vehicles with Distronic (DTR). It is activated if the vehicle gets too close to the vehicle in front. The signal to actuate the DTR warning lamp (A1e59) comes from the DTR control unit (N63/1) via the CAN-C.

DTR function lamp (A1e60)
The DTR function indicator lamp (A1e60) is only fitted to vehicles with Distronic (DTR). It is actuated when the Distronic (DTR) is switched on. The signal to actuate the DTR function indicator lamp (A1e60) comes from the DTR control unit (N63/1) via the CAN-C.

With some indicator lamps and warning lamps a fault message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) in parallel with the actuation. Whilst most messages in the multifunction display (A1p13) can be acknowledged, the indicator lamps and warning lamps light up as long as there is a fault. Acknowledgment is not possible.

Apart from the actuations described above all the indicator lamps and warning lamp are actuated on the indicator lamp test with the following exceptions:
- Left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1)
- Right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2)
- Preglow indicator lamp (A1e16)
- High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)
- Seat belt warning light (A1e9)

All the indicator lamps and warning lamps in the instrument cluster (A1) are equipped with light emitting diodes.
