Oil sensor (up to 05/2005)
Tasks of the oil sensor are:
^ Detecting oil temperature
^ Detecting oil quality for demand-based oil change interval display
^ Warning the driver that the oil level is too low by means of an indication in the instrument cluster

The oil level, oil temperature and oil quality are detected by means of an oil sensor installed in the oil pan.
The oil sensor, which functions according to the capacitive measuring principle, has integrated electronics, which process the three signals into one PWM signal (pulse-width modulate signal).
The PWM signal is transmitted to the ME control unit and then on via the CAN data bus to the instrument cluster.
Each information block consists of three successive square-wave signals, This is followed by a short pause.
A measured variable is assigned to each square-wave signal (A, B, C). The quantisizing in each case is based on the on/off ratio (T) of approx. 20 to 80 %.

Power for the oil sensor of approx. 5 V (sensor voltage) is supplied by the ME control unit.

Faults at the oil sensor are detected by the ME control unit and entered in the fault memory.

Oil level indicator switch (as of 06/2005)
The minimum oil level in the oil pan is monitored by an oil level check switch integrated in the oil pan.
If the oil level is sufficient, the contact to the engine ground is closed. If the minimum oil level is too low, the switch opens and the ME control unit sends a corresponding signal via the CAN data bus to the instrument cluster.
