Bodyshell Complaints Regarding Rear Fender at Wheel Arch
Should you receive complaints regarding corrosion on the rear fender follow the procedures below.
A. Remedy 1 for Corrosion in Area A
1. Remove corrosion on the rear fender (1) in area A.
2. Mask off wheel arch in visible area B with clean edges.
3. Remove bulkhead on rear fender (1).
4. Detach trim on entrance longitudinal member.
5. Mask off rear bumper.
6. Apply primer filler. Use only MBUSA approved products as outlined in S-B-98.00/13P or latest version.
7. Coat wheel arch in area A with a sprayable seam sealant or paintable underfloor protection.
8. To ensure proper adhesion leave no cleaning agent residue behind. Observe all manufacturer recommendations for curing and working times of the sealant. Mask off the wheel arch in the visual area B with clean edges for painting. Offset the tape by approximately 1 to 2 mm from the area.
9. Paint over wheel arch in area A.
10. Remove the first piece of masking tape on the wheel arch.
11. Carefully remove masking tape from the visible area B.
12. Apply cavity preservation.
13. Reinstall all removed parts.
B. Remedy 2 for Corrosion of Areas A and B
1. Remove corrosion on the rear fender 1 in the areas A and B.
2. Remove bulkhead on the rear fender.
3. Detach the trim on entrance of the longitudinal member.
4. Remove the rear bumper.
5. Remove the rear lamp unit.
6. Remove the trim frame on the rear window.
7. Apply the prime filler. Use only MBUSA approved products as outlined in S-B-98.00/13P or latest version.
8. Coat wheel arch in area A with a sprayable seam sealant or paintable underfloor protection.
9. To ensure proper adhesion leave no cleaning agent residue behind. Observe all manufacturer recommendations for curing and working times of the sealant.
10. Paint wheel fender.
11. Apply cavity preservation.
12. Reinstall all removed parts.
C. Remedy 3a for Corrosion or Rust Through Damage in Area A and B
1. Refer to WIS document SM63.50-P-1000C.
2. In cases where areas A and B have corrosion or rust-through damage, the repair panel must be fabricated to match the damage profile and it should be installed as a partial section. If the scope of the repair is smaller than the shaded area (Figure 2), repair stage 3 must be carried out.
NOTE:
Repair Stages Defined
a. Repair Stage 3: If the damage is equal to or smaller than the shaded area, replace the entire pictured repair panel (Figure 2).
b. Repair Stage 4: If the damage is larger than the shaded area, the repair panel must be fabricated from the entire fender.
D. Remedy 3b for Deep Damage to Outer Rear Wheel Well

2. In cases where severe corrosion or rust-through damage, the repair panel is acquired from the existing replacement part.
E. Remedy 4a for Severe Corrosion or Rust-Through Damage in Areas A and B
1. See In cases where areas A and B have severe corrosion or rust-through damage, see WIS-net document SM63.50-P-1000C.
2. If the scope of the repair is greater than or equal to the shaded area (Figure 2), then repair stage 4 must be carried out.
F. Remedy 4b for Deep Damage to the Outer Rear Wheel Well
1. See WIS-net document SM63.50-P-1000C.
2. In cases where the area of the outer rear wheel well has severe corrosion or rust-through damage, the repair panel is acquired from the existing replacement part.
