Suspension - Front Axle Metallic Knocking Noises

Date: September 16, 2008

Order No.: P-B-32.25/68

Supersedes:

Group: 32

SUBJECT:
Model 211.082/087/282/287

Without Codes (489) Airmatic Suspension and/or (950/951/952/P96) Sports Suspension Metallic Knocking / Rattling Noise from Front Axle Area

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of a metallic knocking / rattling noise from the front axle area when driving on rough and/or uneven road surfaces when the wheel rebounds, replace the front shock absorbers with revised parts. Refer to WIS documents AR32.25-P-1017T and AR32.25-P-1018TS.

Note:
The metallic knocking / rattling noise is caused by the shock absorber's internal rebound buffer spring. The condition is most pronounced when driving slowly over speed bumps or road undulations. The rebound buffer spring has been eliminated in the revised shock absorbers. This condition only affects 4Matic vehicles without Airmatic and Sports suspension.

Note:
The revised shock absorbers are planned to enter series production on 10/01/2008.
