Rumbling Noise from Rear Axle Area

If you receive customer reports in the above model of audible rumbling noises from the rear axle area on rough roads, there may be excessive play in the metal bushing of the rubber mount in the lower fastening eye of the shock absorber. Please perform the below procedure to resolve.

1. Remove shock absorber, refer to WIS document no. AR32.25-P-0110TS

2. Press metal bushing out of rubber mount (Figure 1), using 124 589 21 21 00 (gauge pin) and 168 589 01 14 00 (sleeve).

3. With a press, press out rubber mount until it reaches the stop of the shock absorber eye using Naftolen and 168 589 01 14 00 (sleeve) (Figure 2).

4. Press rubber mount completely out using a suitable punch and 168 589 01 14 00 (sleeve) (Figure 3).

5. Press in a new elastomer bushing using Naftolen and 168 589 01 14 00 (sleeve) (Figure 4).

Note:
The bushing must sit straight in the shock absorber eye, press the bushing slightly past the centered position, then press it back into the centered position always keeping it lubricated

6. Clamp shock absorber eye in vise and move it back and forth (in the direction of the arrow) until the bushing is correctly seated (Figure 5).

7. Bushing should now be positioned correctly (Figure 6).

8. Reinstall shock absorber, refer to WIS document no. AR32.25-P-0110TS.
