Average Speed, Function

Average Speed, Function

The trip computer makes it possible to provide a display of average travel speed:
- "SINCE START" (short-distance memory) and
- "SINCE RESET" (long-distance memory)

Depending on the unit setting (kilometers/miles) and the national variant coding of the instrument cluster (A1) the fuel consumption is displayed in:
- kph (ECE, Japan) or
- mph (USA).

The average speed is displayed in either kilometers per hour (Figure 1) or miles per hour (Figure 2). ("SINCE START" (transient memory) or "SINCE RESET" (extended memory) appears in the text boxes (3):
- The display resolution is one kilometer per hour or one mile per hour.
- The display range extends from 0 to 260 km/h or 0 to 160 mph.
- The figure is updated once per second (display refresh).

The average speed is calculated by taking the quotient of the distance traveled and the time since the last reset of the short- or long-distance memory.

Average speed "SINCE START" (short-distance memory), function
- Activate the "SINCE START" display mask (short-distance memory) using the system select pushbutton (S110s3) and the scroll forward/back pushbutton (s110s1) on the multifunction steering wheel.
The display is based on the data registered and calculated since the last reset of the transient memory
- The distance traveled "SINCE START" appears in the leftside multifunction display panel (A1p13).
- Additional information appears in the right-side multifunction display panel (A1p15):
- the average travel speed
- the time elapsed since the beginning of the journey
- the average rate of fuel consumption

Average speed "SINCE RESET" (long-distance memory), function
- Activate the screen mask for "SINCE RESET" (extended memory) with the system selection (S110s3) and forward and reverse scroll keys (S110s1) on the multifunction steering wheel.
The display is based on the data registered and calculated since the last reset of the extended memory
- The distance traveled "SINCE RESET" appears in the leftside multifunction display panel (A1p13).
- Additional data are also available for viewing in the right-side multifunction display panel (A1p15):
- the average trip speed
- the elapsed time since the most recent reset
- the average fuel consumption

The following information is required:
- Travel time: Calculated internally in the instrument cluster (A1).
- Mileage: Calculated from the four wheel speeds.
Wheelspeeds arrive at the instrument cluster (A1) as CAN messages generated by the SBC control unit (A7/3n1) and the control unit for ESP, PML and BAS (N47-5).

NOTE: it is perfectly normal for different figures appear in the "SINCE START" mask (transient memory) and in the "SINCE RESET" (extended memory), as the two displays rely on different databases. The "SINCE START" display (short-distance memory) reacts much more sensitively to the current driving situation than the "SINCE RESET" display (long-distance memory). If the input data is erroneous, the display shows: "--".
