The ETC control unit (N15/3) measures the current operating state of the vehicle and controls all shifting operations taking the ease of shifting and driving situation into consideration.

It receives input signals as operating data from the:
- Starter lockout contact (Y3/6s1)
- Transmission oil temperature sensor (Y3/6b1)
- RPM sensor 2 (Y3/6n2)
- Rpm sensor 3 (Y3/6n3)

In addition there is a connection to the following via the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C):
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10)
- Electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5)
- Traction system control unit (N47)
- DTR control unit (N63/1)
- EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)

The ETC control unit (N15/3) controls the solenoid valves for modulating and shift pressure and for shifting gears.
The necessary pressure in relation to the torque to be transmitted, is computed from all the input signals.

- Limp-home mode
- Cruise control operating
- Speed limiter active

- Engine oil status
- Specified torque
- Starter running

- Shift curve offset

- Targeted gear

Electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5):
- Selector lever position
- Transmission mode switch (S16/5)
- Locking solenoid energized

Traction system control unit (N47)
- Torque request
- Wheel speeds
- Braking torque
- Gear shift in "N"
- Lateral acceleration
- Targeted gear
- Active downshift
- Shift curve offset
- Cruise control OFF
- Parking brake status
- System status

DTR control unit (N63/1):
- Shift curve offset
- Maintain gear position
- Active downshift

Electronic ignition switch control unit (N73):
- Refrigerant compressor (A9) ON

The following information is output to other systems.
Instrument cluster (A1):
- Program selection at transmission mode switch (S16/5) for transmission mode display (A1p16)

Motor electronics control unit (N3/10):
- Request: engine torque
- Limp-home
- Starter release
- Engine emergency stop
- Transmission variant
- Actual gear engaged/target gear
- Transmission mode selection at transmission mode switch (S16/5)
- Torque converter lockup clutch status

Traction system control unit (N47)
- Wheel torque factor
- Kick-down
- Transmission variant
- Actual gear engaged/target gear

DTR control unit (N63/1):
- Kick-down
