Restraint System - SRS Lamp ON/DTC's Stored

Date: July 9, 2003

Order No.: P-B-91.60/61

Supersedes:

Group: 91

SUBJECT:
Model 230.474/475
Model Year 2003
SRS Lamp Illumination

If you receive customer reports in the above models of illumination of the SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) lamp within the instrument cluster, accompanied by either of the below diagnostic fault codes perform the following procedure.

Fault Codes:

[B1859-The Ignition Circuit With Component R12/13 Driver's Airbag Ignition Squib 1 has > resistance]
[B1860-The Ignition Circuit With Component R12/14 Driver's Airbag Ignition Squib 2 has > resistance]

Procedure:

1) Using STAR Diagnosis follow the "Guided Tests" procedures for "Test Ignition Circuit With Component R12/13 or R12/14 Driver Airbag Ignition Squib 1 or 2 For Incorrect Resistance". If the "Guided Test" instructs possible causes and remedies as wiring related, then proceed with step 2. Otherwise continue diagnostics as outlined within STAR Diagnosis.

2) Remove the Smartkey from the Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS).

3) Remove the driver's airbag. Refer to WIS document AR91.60-P-0660R.

4) Remove the steering wheel. Refer to WIS document AR46.10-P-01001.

Note:
Do not reuse the original steering wheel countersunk bolt, a new bolt is required during installation.

5) Remove the clock spring contact. Refer to WIS document AR46.10-P-02001.

6) Remove the steering angle sensor. Refer to WIS document AR46.10-P-03001.

7) Remove the steering column module. Refer to WIS document AR54.25-P-28021.

8) Locate the steering column module connector (Figure 1), and remove it from the steering column mounting bracket.

Note:
There are two retaining clips on the side of the steering column module connector that must be released prior to connector removal. Care should be taken when releasing the retaining clips, as they can be easily fractured.

9) Remove electrical tape from electrical harness, in order to expose wires.

10) Remove terminal 11 (brown/yellow wire) and terminal 4 (yellow wire) from the steering column module connector.

11) Cut terminal 11 and 4 circuit approximately 100 mm from the end of the socket connector (Figure 2).

12) Strip approximately 15 mm from the end of the 2 cut steering column module wires.

13) Cut each piece of the wire harness repair section kit (P/N 000 540 47 05) approximately 115 mm from the end of the socket connector (Figure 2).

14) Strip approximately 15 mm from the cut end of the wire harness repair kit.

Note:
Twist the 15 mm stripped ends of the repair section and the main wire harness together prior to soldering.

15) Using a solder connector, connect the repair section wire to the main harness. Reference WIS document AR00.19-P-0100-09A.

16) Install the repaired terminal 11 and 4 sockets into the steering column module connector.

Note:
Ensure that during reassembly, terminal 11 and terminal 4 circuits are correctly positioned and locked within the steering column module connector.

17) Wrap the steering column module wire harness with electrical tape.

18) Reverse steps 2 - 8 for reassembly.

19) Using STAR Diagnosis perform a "Short Test", and erase all stored diagnostic fault codes.

20) Using STAR Diagnostic normalize the vehicle's electrical system. Refer to WIS document AR54.10-P-0003R.

21) Using the steering wheel adjustment stalk, move the steering wheel through its full range of motion, and verify that the SRS lamp does not illuminate.
