The gas injection and ignition system (engine control) SIM 4KE is a further development of the distributor ignition system and HFM sequential multiport fuel injection/ignition system.

The abbreviation SIM 4KE means:
S = Siemens
I = Integrated
M = Motorsteuerung (Engine Control)

4 = 4-cylinder
KE = Kanal-Einspritzer (port injection)

Engine control is incorporated within the ME control unit (N3/10) and contains the following systems:
^ Ignition system
^ Injection system
^ Electronic accelerator
^ Diagnosis and fault storage
^ Drive authorization system and immobilizer
^ Emission control system

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit evaluates the following basic information for engine control:
- Intake air temperature
- Coolant temperature
- Atmospheric pressure
- Intake manifold pressure
- O2 concentration upstream and downstream of the firewall catalytic converter
- Throttle valve position
- Recirculated air flap position
- Inlet and exhaust camshaft position
- Accelerator pedal position
- Clutch operating system (for transmission 716)
- Alternator interface
- Air mass
- Engine speed and crankshaft position
- Knock identification
- Brake recognition (up to about 2004)
- Oil temperature (up to 05/05)

Additional input signals received by the ME control unit via the CAN data bus (Controller Area Network) are, for example:
- Vehicle speed
- Drive position detection (with transmission 722)
- Cruise control detection
- Brake recognition (from about 2004)
- Start enable (drive authorization system)
- Crash signal

According to the equipment and the model, individual control units are networked with each other via the CAN data bus. The following control units networked with the ME-SFI [ME] control unit are responsible for the engine control:
