The Nivomat is used as a semi-supporting element at the rear axle of the vehicle. The main portion of the vehicle curb weight (rear) is carried by a mechanical spring that works alongside the Nivomat system. The Nivomat system is responsible for carrying the main portion of the payload. 3 main springs are used.

These are:
^ The mechanical supporting spring
^ The gas-operated spring
^ The stop buffer

Mechanical supporting spring
The mechanical supporting spring is weaker than a spring used in conventional damping applications since the Nivomat system already provides part of the spring force required.

Gas-operated spring
The volume of gas enclosed in the high pressure reservoir of the Nivomat system is used for additional suspension.

Stop buffer
The stop buffer is used as the jounce increases to limit the jounce travel.
