Overall description
The Parktronic system (PTS) is an ultrasonic measuring system for detecting the distance to an obstacle. In the process it assists the driver to estimate the distances to obstacles in front of and behind the vehicle.
When driving forwards the area in front of the vehicle is monitored. When reversing the area in front of and behind the vehicle.
Function requirements
- Circuit 15 ON
- Vehicle speed 16 km/h
In addition when driving forwards:
- Selector lever in position "D" (with transmission 722)
- "reverse gear engaged" signal is not applied
In addition when reversing:
- The "reverse gear engaged" signal is applied or
- Selector lever in position "N" or "R" (on transmission 722)
- No trailer operation (with code (550) trailer hitch)
Function
The distance between the vehicle and obstacle is detected by the front bumper PTS sensor unit (A42) or rear bumper PTS sensor unit (A43) and passed on to the Parktronic control unit (N62).
Taking into account the double distance (to and fro) and the speed of sound, the Parktronic control unit (N62) calculates the distance to the obstacle.
Corresponding to the calculated values the Parktronic control unit (N62) actuates the appropriate center instrument panel PTS warning indicator (A44/4) or the rear dome lamp PTS warning indicator (A44/3).
Visual warning:
- Yellow and red segments
The brightness of the segments depends on the day/night signal of the automatic light switch daylight sensor (B32/1) or of the rain/light sensor (B38/2) via the overhead control panel control unit (N70).
Acoustic warning:
- Intermittent signal up to continuous signal.
Activation or deactivation of the Parktronic system (PTS)
Automatic activation or deactivation
- When driving forwards and at a decreasing speed of ≤16 km/h the Parktronic system (PTS) is active, i.e. the center instrument panel PTS warning indicator (A44/4) and front bumper PTS sensor unit (A42) are active.
- When driving forwards and at an increasing speed of ≥18 km/h the Parktronic system (PTS) goes into standby mode, i.e. the center instrument panel PTS warning indicator (A44/4) is deactivated. The front bumper PTS sensor unit (A42) remains active.
- When reverse gear is engaged in addition the rear area of the vehicle is monitored by the rear bumper PTS sensor unit (A43). The optical or acoustic distance communication takes place via the rear dome lamp PTS warning indicator (A44/3).
- From a speed of 40 km/h the entire Parktronic system (PTS) is deactivated by the Parktronic control unit (N62).
- On vehicles with code (550) trailer hitch and a detected trailer, the rear bumper PTS sensor unit (A43) and the rear dome lamp PTS warning indicator (A44/3) is deactivated as otherwise the trailer might be detected as an obstacle.
Manual activation or deactivation
- The Parktronic system (PTS) can be switched off and on manually via the PTS OFF switch (N72/1s8) in the upper control panel control unit (N72/1).
The feedback ensues via a bright red LED in the PTS OFF switch (N72/1s8).
The Parktronic system (PTS) is activated automatically again during the next ignition sequence.
