Body - Convertible Top Won't Open or Close

Date: February 6, 2004

Order No.: P-B-91.50/68

Supersedes:

Group: 91

SUBJECT:
Model 209.465/475/476 Soft Top Will Not Open or Close

If you receive customer reports in the above vehicles that the soft top will not open or close, please first check if the roll bar has deployed. In this case, the rear head restraints cannot be retracted using the switch in the upper control panel which will prevent the soft top from opening and closing. Additionally, when the soft top switch is activated, the instrument cluster will first display the message in white Top in operation" for approximately 2 seconds and then will display the message in white "Top Visit workshop"!

To manually retract the roll bar, follow the instructions in the Operator's Manual on page 351 for edition A or page 354 for edition B. The hex wrench must be aligned with the 3 stitches and held exactly vertical to depress the release tab. The release tab must be held down until the head restraint is fully retracted. Then remove the hex wrench and repeat for the other side.

The arrows below (Figures 1 & 2) point to the roll bar release tabs behind the (removed) rear seat backrest. The small size of the opening above the tab makes the alignment of the hex wrench tool critical. There is no need to remove the rear seat backrest to access the release tabs.
