Digital Tele Aid(R) - Control Module Retrofit

Date: December 2006
Order No.: P-I-82.95/560
Supersedes:
Group: 82

SUBJECT:
MODEL 209.465/475/476 with SA CODE (349)
MODEL YEAR 2004
DIGITAL TELE AID CONTROL MODULE

Warning:
Do not disconnect the negative battery cable. Extensive reprogramming requirements are otherwise necessary. Wiring harnesses are therefore electrically active. Severe vehicle damage, personal injury, or death from electrical shock could result. Exercise extreme caution while executing these installation instructions. Keep the ignition and radio powered OFF through the final test.

Notes on D2B optical fibers
- Optical fibers damage easily-handle optical fibers with care to prevent cuts, nicks, abrasions, and crushing.
- Optical fiber "ring configurations" must form a closed loop to function (i.e. couple the input of a component with the output of the preceding component).
- Identify D2B optical fibers by their orange, semi-rigid insulation.
- Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from bundled vehicle electrical harnesses does not affect optical fibers.
- The digital Tele Aid control module for vehicles equipped with ECALL2 has a D2B port. Do not connect the D2B port of the digital Tele Aid control module if the existing analog Tele Aid control module has no D2B port. Include the digital Tele Aid control module in the D2B ring configuration only if the existing analog Tele Aid control module has a D2B port.

A. Preparing for the Installation
1. Read these installation instructions in their entirety before proceeding.
2. Remove the floor covering in the trunk.
- See WIS document AR68.30-P-4600QA, "Remove paneling in trunk"

3. Remove the metal panel covering the electronics compartment in the floor at the front of the trunk.
- See WIS document AR68.74-P-1000QA, "Remove/install rear mounting wall"

B. Retrofitting the Digital Tele Aid Control Module
1. Leave the analog Tele Aid control module installed to perform this step. Exchange the analog Tele Aid control module with the digital Tele Aid control module only when prompted by Star Diagnosis.

For automatically version coding the Tele Aid control module, select in Star Diagnosis:

Control units > Information and communication > Audio, video, navigation and telematics > Tele Aid > Initial Startup > Initial Startup with automatic takeover of settings of previous control unit or, for manually version coding the Tele Aid control module, select in Star Diagnosis:

Control units > Information and communication > Audio, video, navigation and telematics > Tele Aid > Initial Startup > Initial Startup with manual settings input for new control unit

See Section C, to better understand how the manual and/or automatic replacements have to be completed in Star Diagnosis.

2. Remove the analog Tele Aid control module from the electronics tray behind the rear seat (Figure 1) by removing the screws (Arrows, Figure 2).

3. Disconnect the cables from the analog Tele Aid control module:
a) GPS antenna connector (A, Figure 2)
b) Power supply connector (B, Figure 2)
c) D2B connector, if applicable (C, Figure 2)

4. Install the digital Tele Aid control module using the previously removed screws.

5. Connect the cables to the digital Tele Aid control module:
a) GPS Antenna connector (A, Figure 2)
b) Power supply connector (B, Figure 2)
c) D2B connector, if applicable (C, Figure 2)

NOTICE:
Incorrect installation of connectors can result in bent pins.
Bent pins will result in component malfunction or failure.
Inspect connectors before and after installation.

C. Version Coding
1. The retrofitted digital Tele Aid control module is not activated. Activate the digital Tele Aid control module by following the Preliminary Draft of "DAS Procedure - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit" posted on Star TekInfo.
Also see posted on Star TekInfo, the Preliminary Draft of "MMI Overview - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit"

NOTE:
Tele Aid version coding the Electronic Ignition System (EIS) control module and SAM Electronic control module via Star Diagnosis is necessary.
