Digital Tele Aid(R) - Control Module Retrofit

Date: November 2006
Order No.: P-I-82.95/509A
Supersedes: P-I-82.95/509
Group: 82

Revised: Changed - Version Coding, Section C, page 4

SUBJECT:
MODEL 220.170/174/175/176/183/184 with SA CODE (384)

MODEL YEAR 2004

DIGITAL TELE AID CONTROL MODULE RETROFIT

WARNING:
Do not disconnect the negative battery cable. Extensive reprogramming requirements are otherwise necessary. Wiring harnesses are therefore electrically active. Severe vehicle damage, personal injury, or death from electrical shock could result. Exercise extreme caution while executing these installation instructions. Keep the ignition and radio powered OFF through the final test.

Notes on MOST optical fibers

- Optical fibers damage easily-handle optical fibers with care to prevent cuts, nicks, abrasions, and crushing.

- Optical fiber "ring configurations" must form a closed loop to function (i.e. couple the input of a component with the output of the preceding component).

- Identify MOST optical fibers by their orange, semi-rigid insulation.

- Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from bundled vehicle electrical harnesses does not affect optical fibers.

A. Preparing for the Installation

1. Read these installation instructions in their entirely before proceeding.

2. Follow the path below if automatically version coding the Tele Aid control module. (Skip to step 3 if not automatically version coding the Tele Aid control module.)

NOTE:
Leave the analog Tele Aid control module installed to perform this step. Exchange the analog Tele Aid control module with the digital Tele Aid control module only when prompted by Star Diagnosis.

Control units > Information and communication > Audio, video, navigation and telematics > Tele Aid > Initial Startup > Initial Startup with manual settings input for new control unit

NOTE:
Print out the "Registration with ATX instructions" when displayed in Star Diagnosis. (Instructions vary according to model.)

3. Remove the rear seat cushion.

- With CODE (223b) - Electronically adjustable rear bench seat
- See WIS document AR91.12-P-1020M, "Remove/install rear seat cushion"
- With CODE (224c) - Electronically adjustable rear single seats, with seat ventilation, seat heater and memory package
- See WIS document AR91.12-P-1020MB, "Remove/install rear seat cushion"
- Except CODE (223b) and CODE (224c)
- See WIS document AR91.12-P-1020MA, "Remove/install rear seat cushion"

4. Lift up the insulation (Figure 1) on the right side exposed by the removed rear seat cushion or rear bench seat.

B. Retrofitting the Digital Tele Aid Control Module

1. Unfasten the bracket for the Tele Aid control module by removing the M4 flange nuts (Figure 2).

2. Slide the bracket assembly to the rear enough to expose the front fastening point of the Tele Aid control module.

3. Disconnect the cables from the analog Tele Aid control module:

a. GPS Antenna connector (A, Figure 3)

b. Antenna connector (B, Figure 3)

c. Power supply connector (C, Figure 3)

d. Power supply connector (D, Figure 3)

e. MOST connector (E, Figure 3)

4. Remove the analog Tele Aid control module from the bracket by removing the three M5 nuts (Figure 4).

5. Install the digital Tele Aid control module using the previously removed three M5 nuts.

6. Reinstall the bracket for the Tele Aid control module using the previously removed M5 flange nuts (Figure 2).

7. Connect the cables to the analog Tele Aid control module:

a. GPS Antenna connector (A, Figure 5)

b. Antenna connector (B, Figure 5)

c. Power supply connector (C, Figure 5)

d. Power supply connector (D, Figure 5)

e. MOST connector (E, Figure 5)

NOTICE:
Incorrect installation of connectors can result in damaged, bent pins. Damaged, bent pins will result in component malfunction or failure. Inspect connectors before and after installation.

C. Version Coding

1. The retrofitted digital Tele Aid control module is not activated. Activate the digital Tele Aid control module by following the Preliminary Draft of "DAS Procedure - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit" posted on Star TekInfo.

- Also see posted on Star TekInfo, the Preliminary Draft of "MMI Overview - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit"

NOTE:
Tele Aid version coding the instrument cluster and Central Gateway (ZGW) via Star Diagnosis is necessary. The engine must be running for the Tele Aid Defective warning to display in the instrument cluster.

D. Function Testing and Final Assembly

2. Reposition the insulation (Figure 1) on the right side seat bottom.

3. Reinstall the rear seat cushion.

- With CODE (223b) - Electronically adjustable rear bench seat

- See WIS document AR91.12-P-1020M, "Remove/install rear seat cushion"

- With CODE (224c) - Electronically adjustable rear single seats, with seat ventilation, seat heater and memory package

- See WIS document AR91.12-P-1020MB, "Remove/install rear seat cushion"
