Date: September 14, 2004

Order No.: P-B-42.20/49

Supersedes:

Group: 42

SUBJECT:
Model 215.374/375/376/378

Model 220.170/174/175/176/178/183/184

Model Year 2000 to 2004

Noises from Parking Brake Cable

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of a noise from the rear of the vehicle, inspect the rear parking brake cable brackets located on the rear axle carrier. If a bracket(s) is broken, replace the welded bracket with a bolted style bracket as outlined below.

Note:
The parking brake cable brackets may break due to vibrations encountered through normal driving operations of the vehicle. As a result of this, the parking brake cable may cause noises if it contacts the rear axle carrier or rear sub frame. However, the function of the parking brake is not affected.

Note:
Always replace parking brake cable brackets in pairs.

1) Pretension the parking brake's automatic cable slack adjuster (Figure 1, 92). Refer to WIS document AR42.20-P-0520-01A.

2) Unhook the left and right parking brake cables (Figure 1, 86) from the automatic cable slack adjusters (Figure 1, 92) and unclip them from the retaining plate (Figure 1, 84) mounted to the undercarriage.

3) Replace brackets (Figure 1, 1) along with the rubber grommets (Figure 1, 1a). Aid grommet installation with the use of liquid lubricant (Naphtolen H) BR00.45-Z-1003-06A.

Note:
Always replace the brackets (Figure 1, 1) for the left and right parking brake cables (Figure 1, 86). Brackets (Figure 1, 1) that are still attached must be removed from the rear axle carrier (Figure 1, 2) by repeatedly bending them back and forth until released. If present, remove any sharp/jagged edges on the rear axle carrier remaining from bracket removal.

4) Clip the left and right parking brake cables (Figure 1, 86) into the retaining plates (Figure 1, 84) mounted to the undercarriage and hook them back into the automatic cable slack adjuster (Figure 1, 92).

5) Slacken the automatic cable slack adjuster (Figure 1, 92). Refer to WIS document AR42.20-P-0520-02A.

6) On those vehicles that do not have holes pre-drilled on the rear axle carrier (Figure 1, 2) for the brackets, drill holes for the brackets (Figure 1, 1) in the rear axle carrier (Figure 1, 2) for the parking brake cables (86). Refer to WIS document AR42.20-P-2001-01I.

7) Install brackets (Figure 1, 1) onto rear axle carrier (Figure 1, 2). Nm BA42.20-P-1006-01A

8) Check the version of the pedal assembly. Refer to WIS document BT42.20-P-0510-01A.

9) Operate parking brake several times and check the pedal travel of the parking brake pedal.

10) If the pedal travel is not within the tolerance range, adjust the parking brake. Refer to WIS document AR42.20-P-0540I.
