EMERGENCY CALL, general
EMERGENCY CALL (E-CALL) is an automatic emergency call system using the availability of new technologies such as vehicle location finding via satellite and telephone for reducing accident causes.
E-CALL allows emergency calls and precise location description which therefore do not depend on incorrect human behavior in stress situations.
Operational sequence
An E-CALL emergency call can be triggered automatically or manually. The following actuation procedures should be distinguished:
- Automatically,
- by the emergency tensioning retractor control module with airbag (AB, N2/2, except model 215)
- by the restraint system control module ( N2/7, models 203, 215, 220)
or
- by the roll-over sensor integrated in the E-CALL control module (A35/8).
From Japanese government:
1. Official confirmation of position specifications is determined by the police and the person involved in the accident.
2. For this reason the position specification is only an additional information.
- Manually,
- by actuating the EMERGENCY CALL system pushbutton switch (S93/3).
If an alarm is triggered, the E-CALL control module (A35/8) sets up an emergency call telegram containing information on the severity of the accident, vehicle identification, vehicle position and type of alarm actuation. The emergency call telegram is transmitted via the vehicle telephone equipment.
The telephone antenna The depends on the model.
Model 129: Rod antenna (A28)
Models 202, 208.3, 210, 220: telephone antenna (A2/49a1)
Models 203, 215: Telephone antenna (A2/22)
If the telephone antenna is defective the system switches automatically switched over to the EMERGENCY CALL substitute antenna (A2/50).
First the emergency call telegram is received by the E-CALL Japan Operational Center and the required customer information is called up from the data base using the vehicle identification number which is also transmitted with the telegram.Together with the position specifications it is now possible to complete a connection to the person involved in the accident. When the connection is successfully completed to the person involved in the accident an emergency call (telephone voice connection) is transmitted to the responsible rescue service (police, fire department, etc.).
Then a voice connection (via telephone) is completed from the vehicle to the rescue service. Then the required rescue measures are started.
When initially started the system performs an authorization. Without authorization it is not possible to make an EMERGENCY CALL.
When authorization is missing the EMERGENCY CALL system does not operate.
