ON/OFF characteristics
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is activated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6). A wake-up pulse allows automatic activation via the Media Oriented System Transport bus (MOST). It can be started via the "circuit 15 ON" status or via the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) of the Comand operating and display system (without navigation) (standard) or with code (352) Comand APS (with navigation).
Before the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system can be started up, it must be logged into the respective telephone network (e.g. D-net or E-net). The Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) on the SIM card is needed to do this. After inserting and activating the SIM card the user must enter the 4 to 8-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) when requested to do so.

This PIN prevents unauthorized use of the SIM card and therefore protects against misuse.
If the number is entered wrongly 3 times, the SIM card is barred and has to be released using the personal 8-digit Personal Unblocking Key (PUK). This allows entry of a new PIN number. If the PUK is entered wrongly 10 times in succession, the SIM card can no longer be used and a new SIM card must be applied for from the service provider. If the PIN is entered correctly, the portable CTEL (A34/6) logs into the respective service provider network and is ready for use.

Switch off characteristics
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is deactivated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6) or automatically after the after-run time set on the portable CTEL (A34/6).
The portable CTEL (A34/6) is decommissioned by operating the On/Off button on the respective portable CTEL (A34/6) and removing the SIM card.

The SIM card must only be removed if the portable CTEL (A34/6) has been switched off in order to protect the memory chip on the SIM card. When the portable CTEL (A34/6) is switched on again, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) has to be re-entered.
