Component Identification:

The selector lever positions "P" and "N" are detected by the transmission mode switch via the electronic selector lever module control unit.
The ETC [EGS] control unit detects the momentary drive position via a contact in the automatic transmission.

The information from the ETC control unit and the electronic selector lever module control unit is sent to the ME control unit via the CAN databus.
The ME control unit requires the information and also for "STARTING", for the deceleration fuel shutoff, the idle speed control, the TWC heating-up and for the transmission overload protection.
