Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)

Function requirements
- Status "Circuit 15R ON"
- The "audio equipment" is activated
- To operate the mobile phone, the enabled Subscriber identification module (SIM) card has to be inserted into the mobile phone

General
After activation of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) using the (VCS [SBS]) switch (S93/2) on the steering column tube module (N80), the user has various commands at his/her disposal to set up desired connection to the mobile phone system or the respective "audio equipment".

The "Dial" function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Selection of and dialogue with the mobile phone system
- Selection of and dialogue with the audio components (radio, CD) and navigation components

Selection of and dialogue with the mobile phone system
After activating the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) using the (VCS [SBS]) switch, the user has a number of possibilities for establishing the desired connection by using the following editing commands.
- User editing commands for stored or non-stored numbers:
- Dial telephone number
- Dial number
- Dial name
- Read telephone book

- User final commands:
- Dial
- Store

Commands are registered by the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) and sent over a direct line to the voice control system control unit (A35/11). The voice recognition is located in the voice control system control unit.

The voice control system control unit routes the signals over the Media Oriented Transport System (MOST) and the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1) to the "audio equipment".

After activation has been completed and the user has spoken the editing command, e.g. "Dial number" or "Dial telephone number", the voice control system (VCS) requests the user to enter a telephone number by speaking it, saying "Please say number".

If an error occurs when entering the desired telephone number, e.g., improper recognition of a number by the VCS or incorrect entry by the user, it is possible for the user to delete or correct the number. If the number was entered without errors and recognized correctly by the VCS, the final command "Dial" given by the user is confirmed by the VCS announcement "The number is being dialed" and the connection is established.

Voice output on the voice control system on vehicles with code (810) Sound system is sent from the "audio equipment" over MOST to the sound system amplifier (N40/3). From there, the voice output is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/5)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/6)
- Left front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/23)
- Right front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/24)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Subwoofer speaker (H4/29)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)

For vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the voice output is transmitted directly from the "audio equipment" via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left front door speaker, mirror triangle
- Right front door speaker, mirror triangle

If the user wants to permanently store the telephone number after entry, it is only necessary to say "Store" instead of "Dial" as the final command. In response to this the VCS issues a voice output "Please say the name" asking for the desired name. After this has been entered by the user, the VCS requests the user to repeat the name as confirmation. Then the number and associated name are stored in the telephone book, indicated by the voice output "Name and number have been stored".

The entries stored in the telephone book can only be called up reliably by the users who store them.

The editing command "dial name" can be used to request a name that is already stored in the telephone book. To this end, the VCS [SBS] requests the user to say the desired name

The edit command "Read telephone book" can be selected to have the telephone book read out by VCS [SBS], in order to press the VCS [SBS] switch when the desired name is arrived at. With this command it is therefore possible to "scroll" through the telephone book.

The editing command "Read telephone book" can also be used when the VCS is having difficulties in recognizing a name desired by the user via a spoken input. If it is already in the telephone book, the name can then be selected and thus the connection established.

The two dialing options available for selection here mean that the final command "Dial"need no longer be issued by the user. After the name has been repeated by the VCS [SBS], the user is informed by voice output that the "Number is being dialed" and that the call is being set up.

If, with the dialing options listed, the desired telephone numbers are not available (e.g., the desired connection is busy), the user then has the option of redialing the telephone number dialed last after terminating the dialing procedure and reactivating VCS [SBS] with the edit command "Redial".

During each dialogue with the VCS [SBS] the user can terminate the dialogue at any given time, either by pressing the VCS [SBS] switch or by saying "Abort".

If a fault is detected by the voice control system or an incorrect user input, then the user can correct the telephone number using the following messages:
- Delete
- Delete number
- Delete telephone number

This means that all digits entered previously are deleted and that VCS [SBS] outputs a message to the user via voice output indicating "Number deleted, please say number or command" and requesting that additional digits or commands be entered.

It is also possible to establish international calls via the VCS. In addition to this, it is also possible to control announcement services or to operate the mailbox.

Help function
The VCS contains a help feature in order to be able to render its operation as simple as possible. The user is in dialogue with the mobile telephone system and says the word "Help", the VCS [SBS] reads out the most important telephone commands. If instead, the user is in dialogue with the navigation system, then he/she can say "Telephone help" whereupon the navigation system changes to the mobile phone system and the VCS [SBS] reads out the most important phone commands.

Selection of and dialogue with the audio components (radio, CD) and navigation components
After activating the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) using the VCS [SBS] switch, the user can use various commands to set up the required connection to the particular audio equipment..

Commands are received by the handsfree system microphone group and sent over a direct line to the voice control system control unit. The voice control system control unit routes the signals over the MOST to the "audio equipment".
