General
The address book enables person-specific information to be saved in the form of entries. Up to 80 address book entries can be stored. Following activation of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) using the VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2) on the steering column tube module (N80) the commands that are available for operating the address book are dependent on the respective status of the address book. The following states are possible:
- Address book not open
- Address book open
Commands are received by the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) and sent over a direct line to the voice control system control unit (A35/11). The voice recognition is located in the voice control system control unit.
The VCS [SBS] voice output in vehicles with code (810) Sound system is transmitted by the "audio unit" via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3). From there, the voice output is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/5)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/6)
- Left front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/23)
- Right front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/24)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Subwoofer speaker (H4/29)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
For vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the voice output is transmitted directly from the "audio equipment" via direct lines to the following speakers:

Address book help
Following the "Address book help" command, the VCS [SBS] reads out all the important commands for the unopened address book.
Dial name
With the aid of the "Select Name" command, telephone numbers can be selected from the address book by entering the related name via a voice command.
Store name
The "Store name" command enables the user to add an entry to the address book. If the command is spoken, the VCS [SBS] asks the user to enter a telephone number. After entering the telephone number the attendant name must then also be spoken.
Entries are speaker-dependent and can only be requested reliably again by the person who initially saved the entry.
Select voice tag
The "Dial voice tag" command can be used by the user to set up a telephone connection by selecting a voice entry in the address book. If just one telephone number is stored in the address book, then this is dialed immediately. Otherwise, the system asks whether the business, cell phone or the private number should be dialed. One can also enter the respective number straight away using a "voice tag" for business, mobile or private.
Delete name
With the aid of the command "Delete name" it is possible to delete entries from the address book. In doing so, a distinction is made as to whether the entry was created via voice input using the VCS [SBS] or whether the entry was a written one. The entire entry is only deleted if the entry was created using VCS [SBS].
Delete keyword (Voice tag)
With the aid of the command "Delete Voice tag" it is possible to delete voice tags from the address book. In doing so, a distinction is made as to whether the entry was created via voice input using the VCS [SBS] or whether the entry was a written one. The entire entry is deleted if the entry was created using VCS [SBS]. Otherwise, only the keyword is deleted, and the remaining data in the entry are retained.
Navigate voice tag
The "Navigate voice tag" command can be used by the user to start the navigation. If only one destination address is stored in the address book per voice command, then this command is used to start the destination-oriented navigation. Otherwise a question is asked as to whether the business or private address should be selected. One can also enter the respective destination address straight away using a "voice tag" for business,or private.
Read address book
Following the command "Read address book" the VCS [SBS] reads out the names that are stored in the address book. If, while reading out a name, the VCS [SBS] switch is moved in driver direction, then this name is selected and a question is asked regarding whether the private, business or the cell phone number should be dialed. For this purpose the voice recognition system is operated in compound word mode; both words from the speaker-dependent part and the part that is independent from the speaker are recognized.
Read telephone book
Following the "Read telephone book" command, the VCS [SBS] reads out all voice entries in the address book's telephone book. An entry can then be selected while the entries are being read out.
Read destination memory
Following the "Read destination memory" command the VCS [SBS] reads out the destination memory in the address book. If, while a name is being read out, the VCS [SBS] switch is operated, the navigation can start. If only one destination address is stored in the address book, then this command is used to start the destination oriented navigation. Otherwise a question is asked as to whether the business or private address should be selected.
Delete address book
The "Delete address book" command enables all or individual voice entries for the address book entries to be deleted. Only the voice entry is deleted, the remaining data in the entry are retained.
Address book
Following the "Address book" command, the address book is then opened.
Address book open
In addition to the commands available when the address book is not open, the following options are also available when the book is open:
- Address book help
- Open voice tag
- Open entry

Following the "Address book help" command the VCS [SBS] reads out all the important commands for the open address book.
Open voice tag
The "Open voice tag" command enables the user to open an entry by selecting a voice entry from the address book.
Open entry
The "Open entry" command can be used by the user to open an entry in the address book.
Spell entry
The "Spell entry" command can be used by the user to open any entry in the address book. The VCS [SBS] presents a list of possible entries on the "audio equipment" display. The desired entry is selected.
The "Next page" or "Previous page" commands can be used to scroll through the list. The "Correction" command can be used by the user to spell the name again.
