The cradle is connected to the UPCI (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1). The UPCI control unit forms the interface to the Media Oriented Transport System (MOST).

Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (A2), with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)

General
The mobile phone is manually switched on using the buttons on the mobile phone or, when the "audio equipment" is switched on, it is activated by a wake-up pulse from the "audio equipment" and through a corresponding signal or after expiry of the run-on time configured on the mobile phone. The "telephone switch-on.off characteristics" function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Switch on function sequence
- Switch off function sequence
- Supplemental information

Switch on function sequence
The switch on signal from the "audio equipment" is sent over the MOST to the UPCI [UHI] control unit. The UPCI [UHI] control unit receives the signal and routes it through a direct line to the cradle.

The switch-on signal is sent from the UPCI [UHI] control unit over a direct line to the E-net compensator (A28/3). The mobile phone is then switched on and supplied with power.

If set on the mobile phone, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is requested after the mobile phone has been switched on. The PIN inquiry is shown on the "audio equipment" display as well as in the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster receives the required data over the interior CAN from the "audio equipment". Depending on the prompt, the 4 to 8-digit PIN must be entered in one of the following ways:
- Mobile phone buttons
- Telephone buttons on "Audio unit"
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])

The control signals from the mobile phone buttons are processed internally.

The control signals from the phone buttons on the "audio equipment" are processed internally and forwarded in the following manner to the SIM card in the mobile phone:
- MOST
- UPCI [UHI] control unit
- Direct line
- Cradle

The control signals from the VCS [SBS], with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), are recorded by the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) and forwarded as follows to the SIM card in the mobile phone:
- Direct line
- Voice control system control unit (A35/11)
- MOST
- UPCI [UHI] control unit
- Direct line
- Cradle

The SIM card is then enabled and the mobile phone logs in to the mobile phone network via the mobile service switching center as follows:
- Cradle
- Direct line
- E-net compensator
- Direct line
- Telephone/cell phone/STH radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53), with code (228) Stationary heater, and direct line
- Telephone antenna (A2/49a1)

After logging in to the mobile telephone network, mobile phone signals can be sent and received in this manner. When the mobile phone is logged into the mobile telephone network, the name of the mobile telephone network is shown on the mobile phone display and the "audio equipment" display.

The display on the mobile phone's screen is forwarded internally.

The "audio equipment" display is sent from the mobile phone to the "audio equipment" as follows:
- Cradle
- Direct line
- UPCI [UHI] control unit
- MOST

Switch off function sequence
The switch-off signal from the "audio equipment" is sent over the MOST to the UPCI [UHI] control unit. The UPCI [UHI] control unit receives the signal and routes it through a direct line to the cradle. The mobile phone is then switched off and power supply interrupted. Expiration of the run-on time configured in the mobile phone takes place internally in the mobile phone.

By switching off the mobile phone and then subsequently removing the SIM card, the mobile phone is taken out of operation. The SIM card may only be removed after the mobile phone has been deactivated in order to prevent permanent damage to the memory chip provided on the SIM card.

Supplemental information
The PIN serves to prevent any unauthorized use of the SIM card. The SIM card is locked after the PIN has been entered incorrectly 3 times. Entering the 8-digit Personal Unblocking Key (PUK) using the buttons on the mobile phone, enables the SIM card again.

This allows entry of a new PIN number. If the PUK is entered incorrectly 10 times in succession, the SIM card can no longer be used and a new SIM card must be applied for from the service provider.
