Function requirements
- Status "Circuit 30 ON" or "Circuit 15R ON"
- One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
- Mobile phone system operating error-free
- Mobile phone and "audio unit" switched on
- Compatible mobile phone inserted into UPCI cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) (A34/15)
- Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered, if set on the mobile phone
- Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone

Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (A2), with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)

The cradle is connected to the UPCI (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1). The UPCI control unit forms the interface to the Media Oriented Transport System (MOST).

General
The user has a facility for managing his SMS messages (e.g. reading or deleting) in the form of the Short Message Service (SMS) application. To this end, the SMS messages received by the mobile phone are sent to the "audio equipment".
The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receiving SMS
- Reading SMS messages on the "audio equipment" display
- Deleting SMS
- Inbox list:
- Read
- Not read

- Composing and sending SMS messages

If, during an SMS operation, faults occur, the UPCI control unit notifies the user with an appropriate fault message in the form of a pop-up on the "audio equipment" display.

The "Short Message Service (SMS)" function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for receiving SMS
- Function sequence for sending SMS on "audio equipment"
- Function sequence for reading SMS
- Function sequence for composing and sending SMS

Function sequence for receiving SMS
Incoming SMS messages are received by the mobile phone as follows:
- Telephone antenna (A2/49a1)
- Direct line
- Telephone/cell phone/STH radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53), with code (228) Stationary heater, and direct line
- E-net compensator (A28/3)
- Direct line
- Cradle

Function sequence for sending SMS on "audio equipment"
SMS messages received by the mobile phone are sent by the mobile phone to the "audio equipment" as follows:
- Cradle
- Direct line
- UPCI [UHI] control unit
- MOST

Function sequence for reading SMS
The SMS messages are displayed by the "audio equipment" on the display of the "audio equipment".
The messages received in the "audio equipment" are placed into different lists:
- Read
- Not read

The user can also delete messages that are no longer required.

Function sequence for composing and sending SMS
The user can compose messages using the following components and send them via the mobile phone:
- "Audio unit"
- Mobile phone

The control signals from the "audio equipment" are sent over the MOST to the UPCI control unit. From there the signals are sent over a direct line and the cradle to the mobile phone.

The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.

The SMS is then sent to the recipient in the following way:
- Cradle
- Direct line
- E-net compensator
- Direct line
- Telephone/cell phone/STH radio remote control antenna splitter, with code (228) Stationary heater, and direct line
