In vehicles that are destined for the Japanese market, the so-called Personal Digital Cellular (PDC) mobile radio standard is used. A portable CTEL bracket (PDC) is installed in the driver information system in the vehicle. In order to use the mobile radio the user must insert a portable CTEL (A34/6) that is compatible with the Japanese mobile radio system (PDC) into the pre-installed portable CTEL bracket (PDC). The portable CTEL (A34/6) is connected to a standard connection for PDC portable CTELs and is therefore directly linked to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). A serial data line is used to transfer control and data signals between the portable CTEL (A34/6) and the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The portable CTEL bracket (PDC) is housed in the telephone compartment of the center console under the armrest. In order to make a telephone call the portable CTEL (A34/6) must be in the portable CTEL bracket (PDC).

Telephone numbers are displayed and selected on the portable CTEL (A34/6) or the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), which also stores telephone books and all service and E-mail information. As well as telephone functions, "Internet" (with e-mail), "24-hour service" and "i-Mode" (optional) are available. The "i-Mode" function is mobile Internet technology.

The functions are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1), the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) display and the portable CTEL (A34/6) display.

The driver cannot use the portable CTEL (A34/6) in private mode. The Internet function and the service functions are only available if the vehicle is stationary and the parking brake has been applied.

The following telephone functions are available with the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3):
- Switching portable CTEL (A34/6) on and off using the hard key on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) (HARDKEY TEL)
- Telephone book administration (with name, number and phonetic transcription)
- The portable CTEL phone book (A34/6) can be downloaded to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Existing entries can be erased using the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and new entries added

In order to use the "i-Mode" that is widespread throughout Japan, the portable CTEL (A34/6) must also support the "i-Mode" communication protocol. The Internet functionality (operation, administration, displays etc.) operates via the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

Voice control system (VCS) with code (813) voice control system (VCS)
Voice control is intended to take the strain off the user during a journey, give the user access to a series of functions without diverting attention from the road, and provide intuitive operation of the functions. This function is controlled by the software integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
The user can activate voice control using the VCS (S93/2) switch. If the voice control system is ready an acoustic signal is emitted by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The user can then communicate with the system, which is only possible in the Japanese language at present.

The following components can be controlled via the voice control system (VCS):
- Telephone components
- Audio/video components
- Navigation components
- Help function (with command display on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3))

Japanese cellular phones store a phonetic transcription of the name in the phone book as well as the name and number. If the phone book is transferred to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), all phone book entries are also immediately available to the voice control system.

If problems occur whilst the user is entering commands, the system reacts with an appropriate command. This is generated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and output via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) and the vehicle speakers.
