General
The switch on/off behavior is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Switch on function sequence
- Switch off function sequence

Operating instruction
The user has the following options for switching the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) on or off:
- Pressing the "ON/OFF" switch on the radio and navigation unit
- Inserting and turning the transmitter key (A8/1) in the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) or removing the transmitter key from the EIS [EZS] control unit

Switching on includes the following subfunctions:
- Switching on function sequence via "ON/OFF" button
- Function sequence for position 0 "Key in ignition"
- Function sequence for position 1 "Radio position"
- Function sequence for position 2 "Ignition"
- Function sequence for position 3 "Engine start"
- Switching on function sequence via "AUTO-ON", with code (386) Mobile phone

Switching on function requirements via "ON/OFF" button
- Circuit 15C OFF

Switching on function sequence via "ON/OFF" button
When the "ON/OFF" button on the radio and navigation unit is pressed, the radio and navigation unit is switched on. The signal is processed internally. All Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) functions are available for t = 30 min.

The radio and navigation unit switches off automatically once this time has elapsed.

Function requirements for position 0 "Key in ignition"
- Circuit 15C ON

Function sequence for position 0 "Key in ignition"
The circuit status is transmitted by the EIS [EZS] control unit to the interior CAN. The data buses are activated for t = 3 min to ensure a quicker switch-on process.

If the radio and navigation unit is switched on with the "ON/ OFF" button, it switches off automatically after t = 30 min.

Function requirements for position 1 "Radio position"
- Circuit 15R ON
- Radio and navigation unit was switched on before the transmitter key was last removed

Function sequence for position 1 "Radio position"
As soon as the transmitter key is in position 1 (circuit 15R ON), the radio and navigation unit is switched on. The circuit status travels from the EIS [EZS] control unit to the radio and navigation unit via the interior CAN. The radio and navigation unit remains in operation until the transmitter key is removed again.

The function options are restricted to:
- Operation of the radio and navigation unit
- Multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1)
- Operation via multifunction steering wheel (MFL)

Function requirements for position 2 "Ignition"
- Circuit 15 ON

Function sequence for position 2 "Ignition"
The circuit status travels from the EIS [EZS] control unit to the radio and navigation unit via the interior CAN.
When the transmitter key (circuit 15 ON) is in position 2, all the functions in the vehicle are operational. The system which was active before it was last switched off (e.g. radio) is switched on and the corresponding basic menu is displayed.

If the radio and navigation unit was switched off for longer than t = 30 min, a warning menu containing general information on how to operate the system is displayed.

Function requirements for position 3 "Engine start"
- Circuit 50 ON

Function sequence for position 3 "Engine start"
The circuit status travels from the EIS [EZS] control unit to the radio and navigation unit via the interior CAN.
When the transmitter key is in position 3 (circuit 50 ON), the engine is started. If a considerable voltage drop occurs while the engine is being started, the radio and navigation unit switches itself off for the duration of the engine start; however, it switches itself on again after the on-board electrical system has stabilized.

Function requirements for switching on via "AUTO-ON", with code (386) Mobile phone
- Circuit 15C OFF
- Run-on time is running

The Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) in vehicles except code (228) Stationary heater , receives an incoming telephone call or an SMS in the following way:
- Telephone antenna (A2/49a1)
- Direct line
- E-net compensator (A28/3)
- Direct line
- UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) (A34/15) with inserted cell phone
- Direct line

In vehicles with code (228) Stationary heater the signal initially travels from the telephone antenna via a direct line to the telephone/cell phone/STH radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53) and from there via a direct line to the E-net compensator.

The Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit is activated and initiates a wake-up pulse via the MOST. The system components are then "woken up", the MOST system is operational in order to provide the required functions.

If the automatic shut-off has taken place after t = 30 min, the system can be switched on again by operating the "ON/OFF" button. The cycle of t = 30 min then starts from the beginning.

When the "ON/OFF" button on the radio and navigation unit is pressed, the radio and navigation unit is switched off. The signal is processed internally.

The circuit status travels from the EIS [EZS] control unit to the radio and navigation unit via the interior CAN.
When the transmitter key is in position 3 (circuit 50 ON), the engine is started. The radio and navigation unit can only be switched off via the "ON/ OFF" button on the radio and navigation unit. The signal is processed internally in the radio and navigation unit.

The circuit status is transmitted by the EIS [EZS] control unit to the interior CAN. The system is switched off with the "ON/OFF" button on the radio and navigation unit or automatically t = 30 min after it has been switched on.

Function requirements for switching off by removing the transmitter key
- Circuit 15C ON

Function sequence for switching off by removing the transmitter key
- The transmitter key can be removed in position 0 (circuit 15 C ON).
- The circuit status changes to 15C OFF.
- The circuit status is transmitted by the EIS [EZS] control unit to the interior CAN.
- The radio and navigation unit switches itself off automatically.

- Circuit 15C OFF

Function sequence for switching off after switching on with status "Circuit 15C OFF"
The circuit status is transmitted by the EIS [EZS] control unit to the interior CAN. The ON/OFF button is used to manually switch off the radio and navigation unit, and t = 30 min after it has been switched on, the radio and navigation unit is switched off automatically.

The radio and navigation unit is always in "Stand-by" mode, when the interior CAN is active.

- Activation via "AUTO-ON"

Function sequence for switching off after activation via "AUTO status ON"
The system is either switched off via the "ON/OFF" button or with "Circuit 15C OFF". An active phone call is not interrupted by removing the transmitter key. In this case, the MOST system switches itself off.

Function requirements for switching off in the event of undervoltage
- Battery voltage < 11.5 V or < 9.5 V

Function sequence for switching off in the event of undervoltage
The control electronics of the radio and navigation unit continuously monitor the battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value the system behaves as follows:
- Battery voltage function sequence < 11.5 V and > 9.5 V
- Battery voltage function sequence < 9.5 V

Battery voltage function sequence < 11.5 V and > 9.5 V
- A message appears on the display and prompts the driver to start the engine.
- If the engine is not started, a further warning follows after t = 3 min that approx. 10 seconds remain for starting the engine before the device switches off.
- In this case, starting the engine serves to prevent the system from shutting down automatically.
- If the engine is not started, the system switches itself off automatically.

If the voltage increases again to above 11.5 V, the radio and navigation unit does not switch itself on automatically.

If a system has been shut down it can be switched back on again manually. However, the warning procedure is always accomplished as long as the fault has not been eliminated.

Battery voltage function sequence < 9.5 V
The radio and navigation unit is automatically set into a defined standby condition, in which only the battery voltage is monitored. Additionally, the current operating condition is backed up. The radio and navigation unit cannot be operated or made to respond using Star Diagnosis in this condition. All communication with external components is stopped.
