Expansion Valve: Service and Repair

AR83.30-P-5520R Remove/Install Expansion Valve

DANGER:
- Risk of explosion from welding or soldering work on closed air conditioning system. Risk of poisoning from inhaling overheated refrigerant vapors. Risk of injury from skin and eye contact with liquid refrigerant.
- Do not carry out any welding work on the closed air conditioning system or in the surrounding area. No smoking or open flames. Wear eye protection and protective gloves. Work only in well ventilated areas. Carry out repair work on the air conditioning system circuit only after the system has been discharged.

CAUTION: Protect air conditioning circuit and components from moisture when carrying out repair work.

DANGER:
- Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.
- Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 degrees C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage bottles. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye protection.

1 Reduce pressure in cooling system

NOTE:
1. To do so turn the closure cap of the compensating reservoir to stop notch "1" and close again.
2. Installation: Inspect engine coolant level and top off.

2 Discharge air conditioning system

NOTE: Recycle refrigerant and jot down quantity of compressor oil extracted.

3 Remove wiper system
4 Force off pressure hoses (1) with clamps
- See "Special Tools - Clamp" given below.

5 Remove coolant hoses (1) and place to one side

NOTE: Installation: Inspect condition of coolant hoses and hose clamps for signs of damage, replace parts if necessary.

6 Remove suction line (2) on expansion valve (4)

NOTE: Installation: Replace O-ring and coat with compressor oil.

- Nut on expansion valve: 8 N.m

7 Remove pressure line (3) on expansion valve (4)

NOTE: Installation: Replace O-ring and coat with compressor oil.

- Nut on expansion valve: 8 N.m

8 Unscrew screws (5) and remove expansion valve (4)
- Seal openings with plugs.
See "Special Tools - Set of plugs" given below.

NOTE: Installation: Replace O-ring and coat with compressor oil. To avoid tilting, tighten screws alternately.

9 Install in the reverse order

NOTE: Evacuate and charge air conditioning after installing the fluid reservoir. When doing so feed in new compressor oil to the refrigerant circuit; note the oil quantity. Check air conditioning refrigerant circuit for signs of leaks.

10 Remove and install fluid reservoir

CAUTION: Generally the fluid reservoir should be replaced when the refrigerant circuit has been opened.
