During trips outside of the digitized map area (e.g. private grounds, parking buildings, country lanes etc.), but still within the digital versatile disk map boundaries, the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) switches over to "Route guidance in non-digitized map area". The following message appears on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) display:
- "OFF ROAD"

The following is displayed if the vehicle is outside of the DVD map border (outside the country):
- "OFF MAP"

In both cases only a basic location finding (couple locating) with correction is performed using global positioning system (GPS) data.

If the "OFF MAP" message appears in the display, navigation can still take place in the digitized map area after inserting the relevant foreign country DVD.

In order to provide adequate positioning in non-digitized map areas and achieve rapid position finding when entering digitized map areas, GPS positioning is needed.

The position information in non-digitized map areas is only approximate.
