GF82.85-P-3001PM Voice Output, Function

MODEL 203.0 /2 /7 as of 24.4.04
- with CODE (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)
- up to Model Year 8

The navigation system route guidance (based on DVD data) is supported significantly by voice output:
- Direction information
- Name of road into which the turn is to be made

The voice data is originally stored in the form of individual word segments on the navigation's Digital Versatile Disk (DVD). This data record is transmitted automatically to the navigation processor by the DVD and is stored there.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following languages at its disposal:
- German
- British
- English
- American
- English
- French
- Spanish
- Italian
- Dutch
- Swedish
- Danish
- Portuguese

Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.

If the vehicle is equipped with code (810) sound system, then the voice signals are transmitted digitally from the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound amplifier (A2/13). There they are amplified and then output via the vehicle speakers.

The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) connects these words segments to form complete instructions or information and generates corresponding AF signals (audio frequency). The AF signals generated in this manner are transmitted internally to the COMAND operating, display and control unit if required (A40/3), amplified there and output via the vehicle loudspeakers. They can be selected with the "System settings" menu. The data for the voice output are then transmitted by the DVD into the navigation processor and stored there.

Loading a language requires several seconds and changes the voice output as well as the menu texts on the display. Voice loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.

During the time a language is being loaded from the DVD, it is necessary to avoid severe vibrations (e.g. on bad roads). Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.

Voice output superimposed with another audio source
When voice output is active simultaneously with an audio source (e.g. CD, radio), the two signal sources are superimposed.

Voice output volume
The voice output volume can be adjusted during voice output . A definable interval is maintained automatically between the volume of the current audio source and the volume of the voice output (interval can be changed in "Settings" menu).

Example for voice output
During voice output, the volume is reduced. If the specified volume difference to the audio signal is not attained, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) then reduces the level of the audio signal until the specified volume difference is again attained. After the voice output the volume of the audio signal is raised to the value prevalent before the voice output. In addition to this, the volume of the voice output cannot be set to below a specific minimum level.

Voice output mute circuit
The navigation voice output can be muted during voice output by pressing the mute button (button marked with struck-out speaker). The mute feature applies only for the current voice output. When navigation voice output and an audio source (e.g. CD, radio) are active simultaneously, the navigation voice output is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed for the first time and the complete playback is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed a second time.
