Removal and Replacement
Remove/install transmission with torque converter

Remove/Install
CAUTION: Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
Danger:
- Risk of explosion from hydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury with caustic burns to eyes and skin from battery electrolyte or from handling damaged lead-acid batteries.
- No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking Wear acid protection gloves, clothes and goggles. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
1 Disconnect ground cable of battery
2 Remove hot film mass air flow sensor
Danger:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer
3 Raise vehicle
4 Detach lower engine compartment paneling
5 Drain transmission oil at oil pan
CAUTION:
- If the transmission fluid is burnt or contains wear particles, the oil cooler lines and the oil cooler must be flushed out
- Installation: Install new sealing ring
6 02-Remove right probe downstream of TWC (G3/6)
7 Disconnect connector O2-from left probe upstream of TWC
8 Disconnect plug socket on electrohydraulic control unit
NOTE: For this purpose, detach shield (10) over the plug socket and unclip line
9 Detach brackets (11) of probe connectors O2 underneath the automatic transmission (5)
10 Remove exhaust bracket (6)
CAUTION: Installation: Check threaded plate (4), replace if necessary
11 Mark front axle gear propeller shaft (3) in relation to transfer case flange
12 Detach propeller shaft of front axle gear (3) in relation to the transfer case flange
NOTE: Installation: Observe marking
13 Remove shift rod (14) from automatic transmission
NOTE: To disconnect the locking device (14a), press upwards until the shift rod pin can be moved outwards.
14 Unscrew bolts holding torque converter to driven plate (13) by turning torque converter to the correct position
NOTE: Remove front cap from torque converter. There are two screws in three places (13)
15 Detach exhaust shielding plate (1) for front propeller shaft behind the transfer case
16 Detach front propeller shaft from transfer case (16)16
NOTE:
- The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft
- Installation: Attach front propeller shaft to transfer case (16)
17 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible coupling and push back propeller shaft
18 Detach transmission ground (W49) from transfer case (16)
19 Remove rear stiffening bridge (8)
20 Detach rear exhaust system (7) from the rubber mounts, lower slightly and tie in place
21 Support automatic transmission (5) using assembly lift and transmission platform
22 Remove rear engine cross member (2)
NOTE: The rear engine mount remains installed
23 Unscrew banjo bolt (12) from left oil line on the automatic transmission (5)
NOTE:
- Seal line connections
- Installation: Install new sealing rings
24 Unscrew banjo bolt (9) from right oil line on the automatic transmission (5)
NOTE:
- Seal line connections
- Installation: Install new sealing rings
25 Lower automatic transmission (5) slightly
26 Unscrew bolts (5a) of automatic transmission (5)
NOTE: Installation: pay attention to different brackets
27 Detach and remove oil filler tube (15) on the right of the automatic transmission (5) and on the cylinder head
NOTE: Installation: Check O-ring at bottom of oil filler tube (15) and replace if necessary
28 Remove automatic transmission (5) at and angle using assembly lift
CAUTION: Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out
29 Remove torque converter
CAUTION: Installation: Lightly grease crankshaft journals on torque converter.
30 Install in the reverse order
31 Perform basic programming
32 Read out fault memory with STAR DIAGNOSIS and erase if necessary
Danger:
- Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during start-up or while running may result in confusions and burns
- Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving off by itself.
- Wear closed and close-fitting work clothes. Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.
33 Inspect ATF level in automatic transmission, add ATF if necessary
