Front Seat Makes a Cracking Noise
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of unusual noises related to the driver and/or front passenger seats, verify the corresponding condition(s) and repair as follows.
Note:
Replacement of the seat mechanism for any noise complaint is not permitted. The claim in this case will be debited.
Note:
When completing the warranty claim, the condition/repair number(s) must be entered in the dealer text field.
Condition 1: Noise while operating the seat adjustment in longitudinal direction (not leather noise).
Affected vehicles up to VIN end no. A189590.
Repair 1:
1. With the seat installed, adjust seat to the rear-end stop position.
2. Apply Multi-grade grease for metal to the seat rail's plastic border (on door and tunnel sides) (Figure 1).
3. It is not necessary to spread lubricant with wooden spatula (Figure 2).
4. Adjust seat to the front end stop position.
5. Repeat step 2.
6. Repeatedly move seat adjustment back and forth between end stop positions in order to evenly distribute the lubricant.
Condition 2: Creaking noises while cornering. Affected vehicles up to VIN end no. A420055.
Repair 2:
1. Remove front seat cushion, refer to WIS document AR91.10-P-1070M up to MY 02 or AR91.10-P-1070MB from MY 03.
2. Press the two bushings on the outboard side (Figure 3, 3) out of the seat cushion guide (Figure 3, 4).
Note:
Frames and adjusters are not to be replaced, only replace the bushing.
Note:
Replace only the bushings (quantity 2) in the seat cushion guide on the outboard side of the seat mechanism. The replacement bushings from spare parts are colored black.
3. Apply Multi-grade grease for metal on all bushing contact surfaces and install the bushings (Figure 3, 3) such that the flange lies behind the plastic lugs (Figure 3, 6).
4. Press the two bushings on the inboard side out of the seat cushion guide, apply Multi-grade grease for metal on all bushing contact surfaces and reinstall the bushings (Figure 3, 3) such that the flange lies behind the plastic lugs (Figure 3, 6).
5. Reinstall front seat cushion. Refer to WIS document AR91.10-P-1070M up to MY02 or AR91.10-P-1070MB from MY03.
Condition 3: Crackling noise when operating the seat height adjustment. Affected vehicles up to VIN end no. A264959.
Repair 3:
1. With seat installed, raise the front seat height adjustment.
2. Remove plastic side panel from seat. (AR91.10-P-1070M).
3. Apply Multi-grade grease for metal to the tubular frame, at the inside of the panel mounting holes (Figure 4, circled areas).
4. Reinstall the seat panel.
Condition 4: Crackling noise at seat well/seat frame junction. Affected vehicles up to VIN end no. A257757.
Repair 4:
1. With the seat installed, raise the front seat height adjustment.
2. Apply special lubricant (Figure 5, A000 989 36 60) to seat well frame junction (Figure 6).
