Operating elements
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) contains a color liquid crystal display (LCD) with graphics and video capability for displaying the relevant information and the function keys for operating the system. Part of the controls are assigned with fixed functions, i.e. they always trigger the same reactio irrespective of the mask applied in each case. The functionality of the remaining controls depends on the current screen. The components integrated in the system are interconnected via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). All data and signals are transmitted via the MOST. As a result the components do not need any individual controls. However, for navigation a GPS box control unit (N41/6) is needed, which is directly connected to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via a serial interface.
Graphic editing and image output
The graphic subsystem edits and outputs the operating displays. The operating screens are internally displayed on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) by the graphics subsystem via the RGB output (R = Red, G = Green, B = Blue). The RGB signal contains the information and amplitudes of the 3 basic colors of red, green and blue and a synchronization signal.
The electronic circuitry in the display unit evaluates the RGB signal and actuates the individual display pixels line by line in terms of color and intensity. A horizontal synchronization pulse occurs at the end of each line. The electronic circuitry of the display unit then starts the next line.
Display
The submenus are displayed on the LCD color display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) depending on the choice of the permanently programmed main function keys (function groups). 5 function key are positioned on the left and right edge of the display. The buttons are positioned so that the displayed submenus can be conveniently selected.
Offboard diagnosis via STAR DIAGNOSIS
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has its own diagnostic fault code memory. When the fault memory is interrogated via STAR DIAGNOSIS, the data are transmitted via the MOST to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1), which is the main diagnostic interface for the MOST components. The diagnostic data can then be read out via the data link connector (X11/4). It is not possible to display faults on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
