Component Identification:
As of 1.9.06, the location and number of microphones in the hands-free system microphone group will change as follows:
^ The number of microphones will be reduced from 4 to 2.
^ The installation location of the microphones will change from underneath to above the inside rearview mirror unit (A67).
Function requirements:
To be able to use the functions of the communication system, a portable CTEL (A34/6) has to be inserted in the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder.
Operation of the communication system
The telephone system can be operated as follows:
^ Using the portable CTEL
^ Using the front central operating unit
^ Using the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster
^ Using the center console button group
^ Using voice commands where the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is installed, with code (813) Voice control system (VCS)
General
The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received via the telephone and GPS roof antenna (model 221) or telephone and GPS antenna (A2/49) (model 216). The reception field strength is shown in 5 stages on the COMAND display, provided the telephone is operational.
All control data and useful data to operate the communication system are transmitted via the following data bus systems:
^ MOST
^ Telematics CAN
^ Chassis CAN
^ Central CAN
The UPCI [UHI] control unit represents the interface between the portable CTEL and the MOST.
"Telephone" function
In combination with the COMAND controller unit, the telephone system features the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
^ Direct dialing of the telephone number via the center console button group, the VCS [SBS], the MFL or the numerical keypad of the portable CTEL
^ Display of the name of the party being called in the COMAND display (if the entered number is known)
^ Display of the name of the network provider on the COMAND display, dialing from memory lists sorted by
- memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of the 10 numbers dialed last
^ Speed dial
^ Telephone number display on the COMAND display and in the multifunction display (if the telephone number was transmitted along wireless)
^ Automatic muting of audio sources during a telephone conversation
^ Bluetooth recognition
^ Operation via Bluetooth with a hands-free system
"SMS" function
The telephone system in combination with the COMAND controller unit offers the following SMS functions:
^ Received
^ Reading
^ Delete
^ Store
With code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Handy", UPCI system, the following additional SMS functions are available:
^ Transmit
^ Edit
^ Have the system read out loud
"E-mail" function
Messages in e-mail format are transmitted and received via the modem in the UPCI [UHI] control unit. An e-mail can be written using the center console button group.
"Bluetooth" function
Bluetooth-capable devices (e.g. hands-free system, laptop) can be operated in the vehicle with the aid of the Bluetooth antenna on the rear roof frame. In this way, it is possible for the rear passengers or the front passenger to make phone calls in "private mode" (without hands-free system) or to operate external devices wirelessly.
"Emergency call" function with code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Handy", UPCI system
An emergency call can be transmitted via the COMAND controller unit even without entering the PIN in the "Telephone" menu.
In the event of an emergency call, the hands-free function can be used even if the COMAND controller unit should fail.
