Trunk Lid Does Not Close Using Remote Trunk Closing

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles that the trunk lid does not close using the remote trunk closing feature, this may be caused by the ball stud attaching the hydraulic cylinder of the remote trunk closing mechanism being torn out of the mounting console. (Figure 1). To resolve, install a new thicker mounting console (A221 630 06 36) as outlined in the below procedure.

1. Remove the trunk lining trim on the right side only reference WIS document AR68.30-P-4600SX.

2. Cover electronics on the right side of the trunk with suitable cover to prevent metal shaving from the drilling process from entering electronic components.

3. Mark all of the edges of the console mount with a black marker or suitable marking devise.

4. Drill out the two outer spot welds (Figure 2, 1) on the mounting console from inside the trunk drill all the way through the console and the vehicle body. Do not drill the center spot weld (Figure 2, 2) at this time.

5. After the outer spot welds have been drilled, drill the center spot weld out (Figure 2, 2). Drill until you can separate the console from the body. Do not drill through the body at the center spot weld.

6. Prime and paint the two rivet holes, use primer stick A000 986 27 50 and appropriate touch up paint stick.

7. Align the new mount console (A221 630 06 36) with marks on the body from the old console location. Use a suitable marking devise (primer stick) to mark the location of the holes on the new mounting console, mark the hole locations through the two hole previously drilled in the body.

8. Clamp the console in a vice and drill the two newly marked holes (6 mm or 1/4" ) in the console

Note:
Let the primer dry completely before painting.

9. Align the new console with marks on the body and fasten the mounting console with two rivets (A004 990 16 97) (Figure 4).

10. Seal both rivets, use surface sealer (A003 989 98 20 10), to prevent water intrusion.

11. Reassemble in reverse order, always use new expansion rivets (A000 991 59 40) to attach trim covering.
