The steering wheel gear shifter MINUS (S110/1) and steering wheel gear shifter PLUS (S111/1) are read in via the local interconnect network (LIN) by the steering column module (N80). The steering column module (N80) places the "upshift" or "downshift" signal on the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C). The fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit (Y3/8n4) receives the signal and actuates the gearshift operation.

Gear shifts at unacceptably high or low engine speed are not carried out.
