General
The route guidance through voice output function is an assistance function that assists the driver without distracting him from the traffic. The destination-oriented navigation of the navigation system is supported by voice outputs with the following information:

^ Name of the next road to turn into

Voice output can be emitted in the following languages:
^ German, English (US and UK)
^ French
^ Spanish
^ Portuguese
^ Italian
^ Dutch
^ Swedish
^ Danish
^ Greek
^ Turkish
^ Russian
^ Czech
^ Japanese
^ Korean
^ Chinese

Special information on the voice output is issued in the following cases:
^ Destination lies in area where driving is only possible to a limited extent
^ Route via ferry

For vehicles except code (494) USA version, additional information is provided in the following instances:
^ Destination lies in area where driving is not possible
^ Route via toll road

Further voice outputs take place at the start of the route calculation, when an intermediate destination has been reached, or when the destination has been reached. On vehicles except cod (494) USA version, for dynamic route guidance, additional voice messages are issued in response to routes influenced by traffic messages.

Function sequence for route guidance through voice outputs
The navigation processor of the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) combines the word segments into complete instructions or information during a voice output and generates low frequency (LF [NF]) signals. The LF signals are forwarded, if necessary, over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system), where they are amplified and output over discrete lines to the following speakers:
^ Left front door speaker (H4/1)
^ Right front door speaker (H4/2)
^ Center instrument panel speaker (H4/27)

For vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the LF signals are amplified in the COMAND controller unit and forwarded over discrete lines straight to the following speakers:
^ Left front door speaker
^ Right front door speaker
^ Center instrument panel speaker

Operating instructions
The COMAND controller unit is operated by the following components:

^ With the buttons on the COMAND controller unit
^ Using the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
^ Using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)

During an active voice output the volume of the announcement can be adjusted by the following components:
^ The volume controller on the COMAND controller unit
^ The + and - buttons for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
