General windshield wiping function sequence
The general function sequence consists of several component functions. These are:
^ Wiping at variable speed (with code (345) Rain sensor)
^ Intermittent wipe (without code (345) Rain sensor)
^ Wiping at predetermined speed
^ Single wipe
Function sequence of wiping at variable speed
By turning the combination switch (S4) into position "1" (wiping with low sensitivity) or into position "2" (wiping with higher sensitivity), the automatic wiper control is switched on.
The position of the combination switch is read in by the steering column module control unit (N80) and placed on the chassis CAN. The front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) senses the required data and transmits them to the rain/light sensor (B38/2) via wiper/inside rearview mirror LIN. The rain/light sensor uses the position of the combination switch and the degree of wetness on the windshield to calculate the required speed stage and the frequency of the wipe cycles.
The wipe request from the rain/light sensor is transmitted via wiper/inside rearview mirror LIN to the front SAM control unit which actuates the wiper motor (M6/1) accordingly
The automatic control is interrupted by:
^ Washing, touch wiping, afterwiping, wiper start suppression functions or
^ a defective rain/light sensor
The function is interrupted by:
^ Turning the combination switch to position "0", "3", or "4"
^ Circuit 15R Off
Intermittent wipe function sequence
By turning the combination switch to position "1" (wiping with a longer interval time) or to position "2" (wiping with a shorter interval time), the intermittent wipe function is switched on. The position of the combination switch is read in by the steering column module control unit and placed on the chassis CAN.
The front SAM control unit senses the required data and actuates the wiper motor accordingly.
Intermittent wipe is interrupted through the washing, touch wiping, afterwiping, or wiper startup suppression functions.
The function is interrupted by:
^ Turning the combination switch to position "0", "3", or "4"
^ Circuit 15R Off
Function sequence of wiping at specified speed
By turning the combination switch to position "3" (continuous wipe with slow speed) or to position "4" (continuous wipe with fast speed), the continuous wipe function is switched on. The position of the combination switch is read in by the steering column module control unit and placed on the chassis CAN. The front SAM control unit senses the required data and actuates the wiper motor accordingly.
Wiping at specified speed is interrupted by the washing, afterwiping, or wiper start suppression functions.
The function is interrupted by:
^ Turning the combination switch to position "0", "1", or "2"
^ Circuit 15R Off
Touch wiping function sequence
The touch wiping function can only be initiated with combination switch in position "0", "1" or "2". If the wiper is not located in the rest position, the request of the combination switch is ignored.
^ Single wipe: For a single touch wipe, briefly depress the combination switch as far as the detent point.
^ Repeated wiping: When operated for a longer period of time, wiping takes place corresponding to the length of operation.
The position of the combination switch is read in by the steering column tube module control unit and placed on the chassis CAN. The front SAM control unit senses the required data and actuates the wiper motor accordingly.
If the combination switch is released before the first touch/wipe cycle has ended, only one wipe is performed. If the combination switch is held depressed, wiping takes place for the duration of the operation, however for a max. of 30 s. When operated for a longer period of time, the system detects a "stuck button" and the function is interrupted in spite of the current request.
The touch wiping speed corresponds to the wiping speed in position "3".
