The side airbag unit is located in a housing, which contains the folded up airbag, the hybrid-type inflator and the ignition squib. On the front side of the housing, a predetermined fracture area is located for the outlet of the airbag.

The electrical connection for the ignition squib is located on the housing side. When the connector is disconnected, the coupling of the ignition squib is short-circuited automatically via a short-circuit bridge.

The side airbag units are fitted with hybrid-type inflators. Hybrid-type inflators provide the following advantages compared to standard inflators they are:
^ Acid free
^ Easier to dispose

The side airbags are designed as a head/thorax bag and are a combination of window airbag and side airbag
