FILE:SERVICE: GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER
PARTS: GROUP I OF INFORMATION _ PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER
Campaign No. 2008030003, May 2008
TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS
SUBJECT:
MODEL 171, MODEL YEAR 2008
CHECK WINDSHIELD WIPER SHAFT GROMMET, CORRECT INSTALLATION IF NECESSARY
This Service Campaign has been initiated because DAG has determined that the grommet of the windshield wiper shafts may not have been properly installed. If not properly installed moisture may enter the automatic transmission through the transmission ventilation. The dealer will check and correct grommet installation, if necessary. In the event the grommet(s) were installed incorrectly the automatic transmission fluid and filter will be replaced as a precautionary measure during the next workshop visit.
Prior to performing this Service Campaign:
^ Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.
^ Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as described.
Please note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.
Approximately 563 vehicles are affected.
Procedure
1. Inspect windshield wiper shaft grommets for proper installation:
^ If grommets are properly installed (1, Figure 1) procedure is complete.
^ If grommets are not properly installed (arrows) proceed to next step.
2. Install windshield wiper shaft grommets (arrows, Figure 1) into shaft opening by hand (use plastic wedge if necessary).
Note:
Ensure windshield wiper shaft grommets are properly seated (1, Figure 1) into shaft opening.
3. Change automatic transmission fluid and replace automatic transmission filter; refer to WIS: AP27.00-P-2702W, steps 1-15.
Note (regarding above WIS instructions):
^ Do not replace transmission pan (this does not apply to vehicles covered in this campaign).
^ Do not reuse the transmission pan gasket.
^ Remove bracket at rear or transmission pan to allow clearance when removing and reinstalling pan (reinstall bracket after installing transmission pan).
^ Use 7G Tronic Filling Station (900 589 00 71 00) and transmission pan drain bore adapter (900 589 00 91 00) to refill transmission. This equipment can be now obtained through the Mercedes-Benz Standard Service Equipment Program (SSEP) ("GOTIS" system referenced in the WIS document does not apply to the US market.
^ As indicated in WIS, do not reuse transmission pan bolts. These parts must be replaced (refer to parts table).
^ Approximately 5 liters of transmission fluid are required to refill the transmission.
4. Flush automatic transmission and torque converter:
^ Remove middle and rear, lower engine compartment panels.
^ Disconnect right transmission cooler line mounting clamp from engine oil pan.
^ Disconnect right transmission cooler line (arrow, Figure 2) from transmission.
^ Connect a 6 ft length of 3/8" diameter hose (A) (local purchase) to the cooler line (arrow) and secure with a hose clamp (B).
^ Place the opposite end of the drain hose (A, Figure 3) into a 1 gallon transparent/semi-transparent container (B) (e.g., empty windshield washer fluid bottle, empty engine coolant bottle with fluid scale indicator etc.)
Note:
Mark the container (B) with tape (arrow) or permanent marker (etc.) to indicate a fluid level of 3 liters.
^ Start engine and drain 3 liters of transmission fluid from cooler line into 1 gallon container (B, Figure 3). Shut-off engine immediately after 3 liters of fluid have been drained, then empty fluid from container (dispose of fluid properly). Refill transmission with 3 liters of transmission fluid.
Note:
Lower vehicle so you can observe the overflow (do not lower vehicle completely down from lift).
^ Repeat the above step in its entirety two more times (for a total of 3 flushes, using a total of 9 liters of transmission fluid to flush the transmission).
^ Replace O-rings then reconnect right transmission cooler line to transmission.
Caution!:
Catalytic converter may be hot. Risk of burns to skin. Wear protective clothing when working around hot exhaust system (e.g., gloves, long sleeve shirt etc).
Connect transmission cooler line mounting clamp to engine oil pan.
5. Check level transmission fluid level; refer to WIS: AR27.00-P-0100W starting with step 7.
6. Reassemble in reverse order.
