GF82.20-P-2100RC Symbol And Ambiance Illumination, Function

Symbol and ambiance illumination in general
The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature comprises the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for symbol illumination
^ Function sequence for ambiance illumination

Additional function requirements for symbol illumination
^ Standing lights ON, circuit 58

Function sequence for symbol illumination
The following information is read in and evaluated by the instrument cluster (A1) to control the symbol illumination:
- Status of standing lights actuation provided by the driver SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN
- Status of variable resistor for instrument illumination (A1r1) (adjustment of symbol illumination from 0 to 100 %)

The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and transmits it over the interior CAN and engine compartment CAN to the following control units. The corresponding control units read in the circuit 58d signal and actuate the symbol illumination of the connected or integrated controls.

Interior compartment CAN:
- Radio (A2) (with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer or with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio)
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56)
(with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio)
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
(with code 512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))
- Driver-side SAM control unit
- HEAT [HAU] control and operating unit (N18)
(without code (580) Automatic air conditioning and without code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning)
- AAC [KLA] control and operating unit (N22)
(with code (580) Automatic air conditioning)
- Comfort AAC control and operating unit (N22/7)
(with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning)
- Left door control unit (N69/1)
- Right door control unit (N69/2)
- Overhead control panel control unit (N70)
- Upper control panel control unit (N72/1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)

The driver SAM control unit actuates the following components:
- Rotary light switch (S1)
- Illumination (R3e1) of cigar lighter with ashtray illumination (R3)
(with code (301) Ashtray package/smoker package)
- Transmission mode switch (S16/5)
(with transmission 722)
- Shift gate illumination (S16/5e1) (with transmission 722)

The left door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the driver power window switch group (S20/1).

The right door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the front passenger power window switch (S21/2).

The symbol illumination of the trunk lid emergency release switch (S88/10) (with code (494) USA version) is actuated by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) irrespective of the circuit 58d signal.

The upper control panel control unit actuates the symbol illumination for the following components:
- Outside mirror adjustment switch with/without mirror fold-in/out feature (S50/1)
- Vario roof/ATA [EDW] switch group (S84)

The steering column module actuates the symbol illumination for the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110)
- Right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)

The symbol illumination of the controls located on the overhead control panel control unit is switched on when a vehicle door is opened even without reception of a circuit 58d signal with a brightness value, equivalent to 100 %. If the status of the vehicle doors no longer changes, the symbol illumination is switched off after t = 30 s.
Opening or closing a vehicle door within this time interval will induce a restart.
The symbol illumination is immediately switched off when the vehicle is locked. Actuation of the symbol illumination corresponding to the status of the rain/light sensor (B38/2) (with code (345) Rain sensor) only occurs at circuit 15 ON. For circuit 15 OFF the symbol illumination is actuated corresponding to the daytime brightness level.

Additional function requirements for ambiance illumination
^ Circuit 15 On
^ Rain/light sensor signals darkness
^ Brightness of ambiance illumination set

Function sequence for ambiance illumination
The ambiance illumination encompasses illumination of the footwells (with code (876) Interior lights package) and the instrument panel. The light intensity can be set using the instrument cluster.

To control the ambiance illumination, the following information is read in and evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit:
- Rain/light sensor status
- Terminal status of circuit 15 or the status of the central locking system (CL [ZV]) is sent from the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) over the interior CAN
- Status of ambiance illumination brightness from the instrument cluster via the interior CAN

The overhead control panel control unit transmits the request to switch on the footwell illumination via the interior CAN to the driver SAM control unit and actuates the following component:
- Ambient lamp (A67e3) in inside rearview mirror unit (A67)

The driver SAM control unit actuates the following footwell illumination components:
- right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- left front footwell lamp (E17/16)

If the vehicle is unlocked using the central locking, the ambiance illumination components are actuated using the brightness value set in the instrument cluster.

The opening of a vehicle door triggers the actuation of the ambiance illumination at a brightness value equivalent to 100 %. After closing the vehicle door, the components are actuated again at the previously set brightness value.
