Satellite digital audio radio (satellite radio) (SDAR), general
The SDAR function enables reception of over 100 digital audio channels from the radio provider Sirius which are subdivided into 12 categories up to May 31, 2009, and into 52 categories as of June 1, 2009.
Reception of these digital audio channels is enabled by means of the following components:
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio or code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer)
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit (up to 31.5.09 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
- SDAR/high definition tuner control unit (N87/8) (as of 1.6.09 up to 31.5.10 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (528) COMAND with DVD changer)
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit (as of 1.6.10)
- Multifunction antenna (A28/11)
Control takes place via the radio (A2) (with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio or code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer) or via COMAND controller unit (A40/3) (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (528) COMAND with DVD changer), referred to as "audio equipment" in the following text.
The information or displays required for operation are output via the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) and also in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1).
The system can be operated using the following components:
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Voice control system microphone (B25/7)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110)
- Group of buttons on right of multifunction steering wheel (S111)
- Buttons on audio equipment
The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The voice commands with activated voice control system (VCS [SBS]) are recorded by the voice control system microphone and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer) via a direct line.
The control signals from the buttons on the "Audio equipment" are processed internally.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following route:
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio signals from the audio equipment are relayed to the following speakers via direct line and output from there:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment transmits the audio signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) via the media-oriented system transport (MOST). The sound system amplifier control unit processes them and relays them to the following speaker via a direct line:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Center dashboard speaker (H4/27)
- Bass speaker (H4/29) (model 204.0)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
On model 204.9, the audio signals for the rear bass speaker (H4/38) are transmitted from the sound system amplifier control unit to the rear bass speaker amplifier (N40/9) and from there to the rear bass speaker via direct lines.
The system is made up of the following subfunctions:
^ SDAR function sequence
^ Function sequence for Real Time Traffic Data (RTTD) (as of 1.6.09 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
SDAR function sequence
The Sirius satellite radio signal is broadcast 3 times to achieve multi-channel reception (by 2 satellites and a terrestrial transmitter). The multifunction antenna receives all 3 channels (satellite 1, satellite 2, terrestrial transmitter).
The multifunction antenna forwards the received signals via coaxial cable to the following control units:
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit (with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio or code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, up to 31.5.09 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer and as of 1.6.10)
- SDAR/high definition tuner control unit (as of 1.6.09 up to 31.5.10 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (528) COMAND with DVD changer)
The satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit or the SDAR/ high definition tuner control unit receives the signals of the multifunction antenna, decodes them and sends these signals via MOST to the audio equipment as well as to the sound system amplifier control unit for audio output on vehicles with code (810) Sound system.
Function sequence for Real Time Traffic Data (RTTD) (as of 1.6.09 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
RTTD is real time traffic data emitted via the "Sirius" satellite radio provider, the reception and processing of which is enabled by the SDAR/high definition tuner control unit or the satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit as of 1.6.10.
The data is available throughout the entire USA. It is transmitted in cycles of t = 5 min and contains reports of accidents and traffic as well as traffic flow information.
This data is provided to the navigation system, used internally for the calculation of alternative routes and also shown in the Audio/ COMAND display.
