"Telephone" function
In vehicles for the Japanese market the so-called Personal Digital Cellular (PDC) cellular radio system standard is used. A portable CTEL bracket is built into the vehicle driver information system. To be able to use the cellular telephone system, the user must insert a portable CTEL (A34/6) compatible with the Japanese cellular telephone system (PDC) into the preinstalled portable CTEL bracket. The portable CTEL is connected to a standard socket for PDC portable CTELs and is subsequently connected directly to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). A serial data line is used for the exchange of control and data signals between the portable CTEL and the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The portable CTEL bracket is installed in the telephone tray of the center console under the armrest. In order to be able to make calls via the on-board electrical system, the portable CTEL must be inserted in the portable CTEL bracket.
Telephone numbers are displayed and selected on the portable CTEL or the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, which also stores telephone books and all service and e-mail data. In addition to the telephone functions, the "Internet" (with e-mail), "24-h service" and "i-mode" functions are also available. The "i-mode" function is a mobile Internet technology. The functions are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1), the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the display of the portable CTEL.
The driver cannot telephone in private mode when the portable CTEL is inserted in the portable CTEL bracket.
The following telephone functions are available with the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
^ Switching the portable CTEL on and off with the button which is located on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and is permanently assigned "TEL"
^ Administration of the telephone book (with name, number and phonetic transcription)
^ The telephone book of the portable CTEL can be transferred (downloaded) to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. Existing entries can be deleted and new entries added using the COMAND operating, display and controller unit

Internet function
The user has Internet access via the portable CTEL. A prerequisite for this is an Internet-capable PDC mobile phone. In order to be able to use the "i-mode" system popular in Japan, the portable CTEL must also support the data exchange log for the "i- mode" system. The Internet functions (operation, administration, display, etc.) are run on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The following Internet functions are available:
^ Next or Previous Page (scrolling)
^ Stop Download

^ New e-mails can be written and sent or stored as a draft.

Voice control via voice control system (VCS)
The voice control system is intended to relieve the user during a journey and provide him/her with a series of functions, without diverting his/her attention from the traffic, and to enable intuitive operation of the functions.
This function is controlled using the software integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The user can activate the voice control using the VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2).
If the voice control is operational, a signal is sounded which is generated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. After this the user can enter into dialog with the "VCS" system, whereby the "VCS" system only supports Japanese. The following components can be controlled via the "VCS" system:
^ Telephone components
^ Audio and video components
^ Navigation components
^ Help function (with the command displayed on the COMAND operating, display and control)
In Japanese mobile phones a phonetic transcription of the name is also stored along with the number and name in the telephone book. If the telephone book is downloaded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, all telephone book entries are also immediately available to the voice control system.
If problems occur with the command input by the user, the system responds with an appropriate command. This is generated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and emitted through the audio gateway control unit (N93/1A40) and over the vehicle speakers.
